The Glamour of the early years of movies

I love the movies of the 20's, 30's and 40's. I love the glamour of the stars and everything else about that period. Some of the photography is not very good but for that time I guess it's considered great. However, as you go through the book you can see how the photography becomes more sophisticated. Of course make-up products began to blossom and there was more to choose from so that the make-up artists became much more sophisticated as well. Great book!

All the stars in heaven

John Kobal's The Art of the Great Hollywood Portrait Photographers is as good as his book on Hollywood with Kevin Brownlow, which is one of the essential books to read (and one of the essential TV series to watch) for anyone interested in movies.

Kobal gives an illuminating account of the function of the movies during the Depression, contrasted with eg Walker Evan's photography, and explains 'glamour', tying movie stars in with the Venus from Milos and the Mona Lisa quite convincingly. Well thought, well written. Chapters follow on the organisation of the studios, how publicity was done as it has rarely been done before or since. And some beautiful images - Garbo by Ruth Harriet Louise, Clara Bow by Nicholas Murray and Eugene Richie stand out, but there are many. The images are exceptional, taken by some of the greatest artists of the camera and the volume layout does the images justice. All complemented with reminiscences from the stars and photographers themselves. The very best history, anecdotal, with many perspectives and implications explored, and written with love.

This book has touched a deep chord sensitive to vanished beauty. The stars are now just names, some of them not even that. And of course they were not the same as their carefully crafted images displayed in this book. These evoke not only the stars themselves but the fact that they brought hope to many who perhaps would have found it otherwise hard to deal with the Depression - all those hopes, fears, ambitions, petty, grand and mean, silly and endearing. Only the images of beauty remain!

About the Author
Dr. Alex Comfort, one of the world's leading experts in the field of human sexuality and one of the most versatile authors of the 20th century, was, essentially, the inventor of the modern sex manual. Though best known for "The Joy of Sex" series, he was also a novelist, poet, and social commentator who authored more than fifty books. A pioneer in the study of old age, Dr. Comfort worked as a head of research on gerontology at University College, London, as well as a lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford University, and an adjunct professor at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He was a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and an associate member of the American Psychiatric Association. He died in March 2000, at the age of eighty.

Disappointing

I thought that turning to a "standard" book to spice up the bedroom would be a sure bet, but I was sadly disappointed by this book. The focus was almost solely on male pleasure, with virtually no time spent on the female orgasm. I would be far more likely to reccommend _The Magic of Sex_ by Dr. Miriam Stoppard as a comprehensive sex manual. That which is good in Comfort's book is not unique and that which is unique isn't that great.

Great for Misogynists

This book is awful if you are looking for a book that explains how to have mutually fulfilling sexual experiences. Though its brief discussion of anatomy might be useful for people who've only had high-school sex-ed, the rest of the book focuses on how women can please men, and says almost nothing about what men can do for women. It advocates "pretend" rapes and tells women they should have sex whenever their men want them to, even if the women don't. It focuses on the tiniest details of what women can do for men, and says very little about what men can do for women. Even if you're looking for a book on the book on the basics, skip this one- it's biased, uninformative, and sends unhealthy and incorrect messages about women's sexuality.

As a publisher, one of the things I hate the most is when big screen movies and made-for-TV movies take really well written, interesting stores and make horrible movies out of them And in doing so turn thousands of people away from a truly enjoyable reading experiences. Sadly, such is the case for both ALMOST PARADISE and SHINING THROUGH.

Do yourself a big favor and beware the screen. Both of these books are marvelous romances, and it took me a long time to get around to reading them, for I was a snob, and didn't 'read romances'. The joke was on me however, where these two novels are concerned, for they have great characters and such stories of love! SHINING THROUGH is also a W.W.II thriller, with the heroine infiltrating the house of a Nazi official. The love of nation and of freedom is also accented. In ALMOST PARADISE, the romance of Jane and Nicky begins before they were born, and the book takes us through their lifetimes... It made me laugh out loud on one page then had me in tears a few pages later. You will need several kleenex to get through the last few pages, trust me. The trick in both books is that Susan Isaacs makes us care passionately about her characters.

Both books are equally hard to put down once you start, but what do you care? It's not like you have a movie to watch.

Shining Through shines

I read this book when it was first released in the late 80's, following Almost Paradise which is my favorite book of Susan Isaacs. I have never re-read any book, with the exception of these 2. Both books have so much detail and character development, accompanied with Isaac's quick wit and sense of humor. I will read them both again in another 20 years.

Great for linguistics buffs & anyone curious about language

If you've ever wondered where some of our "bad words" come from (or even what they meant!), then this is the book for you. Highly readable, extremely comprehensive, and always entertaining, Hugh Rawson's 'Wicked Words' is a must-have for anyone curious about language, society, history, and the fine art of insulting your fellow man. There's careful research (lays to rest the old rumour about 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' being the source of a well-known dirty word) mixed with sly humor. A word of caution: Rawson covers even the most taboo words in the English language, so an open mind is a necessity. And you'll want to think twice before letting your kids look at it. Other than that, I say buy it and put it on the shelf next to your dictionary and your encylopedia!

I love this book, and recommend the hard-back edition if you can find it! It is nostalgic, collectible fun for the true Oz fan. Photos are all black and white, but large, rare stills you don't often see. It gives a basic, but thorough description of the story line, the filming process of the movie, the casting, production trends, music, and what makes this movie a classic. "Super Cute!" I'm into cute, and would purchase this book for any little one who loves the movie as much as I do. Fun gift for an older senior, who doesn't want to focus on the words so much as read something sweet, that is easy and informative. A terrific basic read on a timeless film-classic, and a worthwhile collectible.

The reality of the Creation story

Those individuals who discuss and wonder about the creation stories provided in the Book of Genesis will find Isaac Asimov's book "In the Beginning: Science Faces God in the Book of Genesis" most useful. The book is helpful in correlating the biblical and geophysical histories of the Earth and humankind. Isaac Asimov is not a Christian and approaches this subject with an even hand and a balanced manner. He is a scientist who has written many articles directed towards those wishing to gain a fair perspective and basic information of a subject. In this book, he compares the biblical version of creation with scientific knowledge verse by verse and describes where the two coincide and where there are differences. I recommend the book highly.

Great content/Crappy editing and proofreading

I'm not going to comment on Isaac Asimov's written word--he is a sound author and scientist. I will address my comments instead toward all the proofing and typesetting mistakes in the 2009 First E-reads edition. There is at least one typo on any open two pages. It is very distracting from the content of the book. If you are wanting a quality addition to a personal library, this version is not the one to choose. If you want the content for a quick read and some education, borrow an older edition from the library--I'm assuming they did a more professional job in the 80's.

Essential Little Rascals Fan Guide - Must Have!

First found this book in a library and was amazed by all the in-depth information and pictures. Decided to buy on Amazon and I'm glad I did. This book, from the 70's, has great biographies comparative to Wikipedia entries of today and detailed episode descriptions.

THE OUR GANG IS MY KIND OF GANG!

The Little Rascals have been a favorite to me for a long time. I bought the Little Rascals DVD collection from a BEST BUY store a few years ago and I had the most fun time watching the episodes. I didn't know that there was a book about the Little Rascals until I saw a copy at the Shaker Heights Public Library. I wanted to purchase a copy to have right along with the DVD collection.

I browsed AMAZON's website and saw that there were sellers who had copies of the OUR GANG: LIFE AND TIMES OF THE LITTLE RASCALS. I purchased a copy and received it in a timely fashion. I was happy with the book, because it gave complete details of every Little Rascals episode that was created. I thought it was only 88 episodes, as indicated in the DVD collection. But then, I realized that this was not true when I purchased the book and discovered that there were 221 episodes in all!

I also liked the added extras in the book-the story of the Hal Roach Studios, brief information of the whereabouts of the main Little Rascals characters, and much more good stuff.

The OUR GANG is a must for Little Rascals fans. The book is the perfect companion to the Little Rascals DVD collection!

This work by John Pimlott is outstanding and beautifully supplements Andrew Mollo's work, "Armed Forces of World War II: Their Uniforms, Equipment & Organization". Beautiful artwork of Postwar combat soldiers and mercenaries and their uniforms, weapons and equipment, arranged by continental zones (US, Asia, Africa,Europe)and respective conflicts in troubbled areas around the globe SINCE World War II. The descriptions of each are meticulous!! Highly recommend this book to both world historians and military enthusiasts alike!!!

I gave this book a two cause it was not interesting to me. I could of read a better book. I had to read it for a language arts class. And I thought it was very boring.It just told about the uniforms and the acsserories and when they were introduced to that military.

I do like that this book covers a variety of spiritual mythologies ...

This book is alright as far as content is concerned. There are some real nuggets herein but there is a lot of meaningless and baseless explanations. Many explanations are also redundant and he explains so many different terms with the same definitions as though the author's own understanding was quite limited. I do like that this book covers a variety of spiritual mythologies which is enlightening to some extent. If one is looking for a good presentation of idioms and metaphysical meanings of words of the Bible in the Judeo-Christian tradition then a far better book is "The Metaphysical Bible Dictionary."

I liked this book because it is easy to understand and it has pictures. I recommend it to readers that like pictures.
