While working on her well-received biography of Carl Sandburg (1991), Niven became fascinated by the poet's brother-in-law, the pioneering photographer Edward Steichen (18791973). That fascination led to this massive volume. Steichen is a pivotal figure in the history of the visual arts in 20th-century America, a brilliant photographer who was at the center of the battle for recognition of that medium. A protean figure, Steichen was not only an artist but a scientist and a war hero. He acquired his first camera at 16; by the age of 20 he was exhibiting in prestigious juried shows. But the key event in Steichen's young adulthood was his sojourn in Paris, where he discovered his true calling as an artist, forged friendships with a number of influential artists, including Rodin and Picasso, and emerged as a major figure in the burgeoning world of photography. He would push his art form to the forefront with the exhibit ``The Family of Man'' in the mid-'50s, still the most widely seen photo show in history. All through his lengthy career, Steichen would be hounded by an unhappy marriage that left him estranged from one of his two daughters for many years (his granddaughters cooperated with Niven for this volume). His achievements are so many, his career so long and the ripples emanating from his circle of acquaintances of photographers, painters, and writers so variegated that it would be hard to encapsulate his life in fewer pages than Niven uses. Perhaps Out-of-Print, but Not Out-of-Mind!

This is an exhaustively researched and beautifully written book about a major force in American photography and American life. There have been many academic and art books devoted to the work of Edward Steichen, and he has written about himself on one or two occasions, but never had someone written the definitive biogaphy . . . until Penelope Niven decided to do so after "getting to know Steichen" during the years she spent researching and writing about his equally famous brother-in-law, Carl Sandburg.
Readers should not be put off by the book's density (it runs to almost 800 pages). Niven is exhaustive but not exhausting, and her narrative is easy to read, detailing the long and fascinating life of an extraordinary man. The biography is also extremely accurate. Future writers in years to come will look to this book for critical source material. The author is a born researcher.
The book is presently out-of-print, a lamentable situation given the recent Whitney Museum of American Art Steichen retrospective and a dazzling new book by Steichen's widow, Joanna Steichen. This biography, if it had been available, would have been a fine accompaniment to both, giving museumgoers and general readers the chance to learn more about this American artist,and providing a counterbalance to Joanna Steichen's more visual, personal, and introspective book.
In sum, this is the grand story of the life of an important American artist, written by a biographer not an art historian. As such, it will appeal to a wide range of readers. We look for a paperback edition of this book, and can only hope one will soon be available.

A fine survey of an incredible life

This book is an incredibly fascinating look at the life of one of the most important men in the melding of art and photography. I am accustomed to looking at photographers mostly through their work, and I was a little hesitant to actually read a biography of a photographer. But Steichen's life is so fascinating, and he existed in such a rich time period for art and photography, that I found this account to be totally enveloping. I had trouble putting this book down, all 700 pages of it. Really a must book for any photographer to understand the roots of a Master photographer/artist and also the emergence of photography as a true fine art form. It is well worth investing the time to read this book.

The only biography about an extraordinary man

Surprisingly, this is the only biography I have found so far about Edward Steichen. Thank goodness it is an excellent one, combining extraordinary research with fine writing. For those interested in Edward Steichen's long and productive life as well as his work, this is a "must have" book, especially now that there is a retrospective exhibition of his work at the Whitney Museum in New York.

Breathtaking artwork!

This is a marvelous book for anyone who in interested in knowing just about everything there is to know about owls. I found this book when I was given an injured owl and needed a quick course on owls. I found it at the library and found SO much good information, and I was absolutely amazed by the wonderful illustrations. I knew I would have to have a copy for myself. The detail about each owl is complete and even if you just look at the 'pictures', you will fall in love with this book, too!

I strongly suggest if you are able to find this book buy it ! I am fasinated with owls .I am thrilled eveytime I see or hear one.
This fascinating wonderful scholarly work of love is chock full of information including sketches pictures and facts like diet habitat wingspan markings calls weight mating habits scat nesting eggs young and family life characteristics tail length beak length distribution hunting methods enemies and defenses and much much more !This great book is just loaded with information including as noted in the title the identification of every owl of North America .My guess is that if the good folks at Petersons made a guide to North American Owls I doubt ir would be as informative this is not a knock at Petersons but rather holding this book by Allan Eckert to a standard set by Petersons.This is undoubtably a work of love by a very well known writer teacher early American historical scholar and seven time Pulitzer nominee Allan Eckert whose works include THE FRONTIERSMAN, A SORROW IN OUR HEART, THE EMPIRE SERIES including GATEWAY TO EMPIRE, TWLIGHT OF EMPIRE, WILDERNESS EMPIRE and many others brilliant books on early American history Native American leaders and fasinating stories of real life figures like Tecumseh, Danial Boone, BlueJacket Chief of the Shawnees and others. In addition Mr.Eckert also wrote a book under the title of "THE WADING BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA" I hope this review is helpful thanks for taking the time to read it.

A BIRD IN HAND MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

Now this is one fine book. Superb drawings, easily understood nomenclature and beautiful photographs. Much information is shared about their life cycles and many of the myths and Ole Wives' Tales that surround the owl are debunked.

This is an extraordinary bird and reading about its nature and habitat is very interesting. And I don't even like birds that much except at Sunday's lunch and Thanksgiving. Originally I bought the book for one of my grand daughters who became overly engaged in Harry Potter and his pet owl. But as I reviewed the book, I found that I became overly engaged on its content. This is what I call a win-win.

Get it today. You won't regret your buying decision.

A Masterpiece

The Color of Light could possibly be the best book I have ever read. Combining every aspect of good literature you could ever want; humour, murder, sex, mystery, romance, tragedy. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry.
This story is about Charles Fuller, he is a writer, and the story covers over a decade in his life, so in some ways it has an 'epic' feel to it. Goldman creates several interesting characters in the story ( "Two Brew" Kitchel takes the triple crown ), but make no mistake the book is about Charles Fuller and nothing else.
Basically the synopsis is simple, a writer writes a very successful book in his early twenties and hits a 'writer's block' that spans into his Thirties. Fuller finds his passage again with the aid of a woman( well a couple of women actually )and once again returns to his old self.
This is a hugely simplified synopsis as this book has many sub-stories and twists. After reading several of Goldman's works I have discovered that the final two or three pages seal the quality of the fiction and leave the reader with full satisfaction. The only problem with this book...it had to end.

The Writer. Guts & Sensitivity. Bravery & Phobia.

About the best novel in town regarding the development (creation) of a writer -- and also, a pretty nifty read about friendship, dreams, fear of success, love, storytelling, crippling idealism, and the merit in never giving up. Goldman's effortless (seeming) prose has the power to make you weep, or roar with laughter (sometimes in such rapid, manipulative succession, you'll fear you're developing mental problems!). Follow Chubb and Two Brew through college, successes, marriages, failures, the creative process, paranoia and maybe even a murder or two. Artistic, funny, so sad, and the kind of book that demands a third or fourth reading. A witty writer, William Goldman also has incredible strength in characterization, pace, dialogue (the best, no wonder Hollywood stole him away!), plotting, and "beauty of the tale." It's a shame that "the novel" (well, reading, in general) is a dying artform, but at least we've got an artist like Goldman to provide! us the kind of wonderous swansong which may revitalize the "wonder of books" (even if it IS 200 years in the future)...!

A Perfect Ending.

Brock won me over with the many layers of his fine novel. I enjoyed baseball as it was played by "real people," and I'm not even a current day fan. I enjoyed the well-drawn characters as much as I delighted in the curiosities of 19th century America. I loved the "exotic" locales of Troy and Elmira and Cincinnati, as well as the more standard San Francisco and NYC of 1869 --- not the stuff of average tales, and all the better. But mostly I enjoyed the ending, because this was above all else a love story, the love of life and the love of a woman, and the ending has to carry it. I approached it as a reader, drawn along by events and circumstances, but Darryl Brock was wiser than that. He approached it as a writer who knew better. The more I think about it, the more I admire the author's skill in crafting it just so. It was perfect.

Great art book of Charles M. Russell's paintings

As most readers will know, there are quite a few books about Charles M. Russell and his paintings (and sculptures). This is certainly a good one (but only of his paintings). Russell actually lived at a time when one could still talk to the old-time cowboys (of which he was one for a short time) and Plains Indians. Chapin's text consists of perhaps 2-3 paragraphs for each image and is easy to read. Paintings on the right and Chapin's text on the left. No images partially lost in the spine. Nice reproductions. In my opinion, this is not the kind of book you read straight through, but instead a few pages every night when you can sit and contemplate Russell's work and take a few minutes to read Chapin's notes on each painting. My copy is from 1978. Find a good copy and enjoy.

This book of Charles Russell's painting is outstanding. I purchased a used book but it is in great condition. A wide variety of his paintings and a short script on the other side of the page explains the painting. I am very pleased with this book to place on my coffee table.

This is a hard-boiled detective novel without the detective. Harrison has a feel for the rhythm of New York, just as Dashiell Hammett had for San Francisco. The plot, told from the perspective of corporate businessman Jack Whitman, oozes sex, blood, and greed. At first, the reader feels sorry for Whitman when he is pulled into a corporate coup d'etat and is caught up in a dangerous love affair after the brutal murder of his pregnant wife. Later, however, it becomes apparent that Whitman is a metaphor for the greed of our era with his amoral ability to use money and people interchangeably. He tries to reconstruct his family by taking in a down-and-out woman and her daughter, while using corporate might to hold the estranged father at arm's length. Meanwhile, he is a point-man for an internal takeover in a multinational corporation. One could feel sorry for Whitman when his life collapses, but the forces that destroy him are cut from the same cloth as he is. The beauty of this book is in the characters' depth. Harrison (Break and Enter, 1990) returns with the story of a 35-year-old widower who takes in a fleeing wife and her four-year- old daughter--at the same time that he's fighting for survival at the top of a communications conglomerate. Jack Whitman's rise to the near-top of a Time-Warneresque corporation was swift and well-rewarded. His personal life was equally successful until his pregnant wife was shot and killed by a drug dealer aiming at nearby rivals. Alone in his big Park Slope brownstone, Whitman now nurses his reflux-ravaged esophagus through the night, and protects his career from attacks on all sides during the day. His company is poised to merge with a German-Japanese conglomerate, an alliance that may take Jack to corporate nirvana or put him on the street. Taking the subway home one night, he meets a beautiful but exhausted woman who, with her little daughter, may be homeless--and after several days, a very tentative Dolores and her much less tentative daughter Maria enter his life. Dolores, a Dominican, has fled her Puerto Rican husband--she's not looking for a relationship, she just needs to stay off the streets. But Jack is clearly and powerfully attracted to her. When the husband picks up Dolores' trail and begins to threaten Jack, Jack hides her and the girl in his house, where she begins to carve out a home for the three of them. Meanwhile, Jack's professional life gets more and more frightening. He's been assigned the suicidal task of convincing the corporation's powerful chairman of the wisdom and inevitability of the megamerger, and the chairman is quite as dangerous as the maniacally vengeful husband.... Intelligent and totally absorbing. What might have been a routine corporate-basher becomes, in the hands of the very skillful, wisely observant, and profoundly moral author, a novel to remember. engrossing thriller

I had some minor issues toward the end. During a meeting late in the novel, a character is forced to present wearing nothing but swimwear. This seemed a laborious way to make a point, and the silliness of the situation distracted me. The ending ties up messily, with everything resolved but in a manner that stretches the limits of disbelief. People are revealed for what and who they really are, certainly, but there's a lack of motivation behind their actions, and their deeds are not convincing.
I'm being deliberately coy, because all faults aside, this is a very impressive book. Harrison's writing style and the depth and breadth of his characters are beautiful. Reading on, you come to feel as if you know these people, and in most instances you genuinely care about them. Even minor characters are fully limned. Better still is what Harrison doesn't say. Jack Whitman tells us that his mother never liked his late wife, and in the next breath that he doesn't speak to his mother much anymore. Harrison lets us read between the lines in many such places.
A classical sense of tragedy runs through this book: that our lives are not foretold but shaped by us, and that we are often the sources of our own ruin. At the tale's end, you'll want to go back to the beginning, armed with a new knowledge of who these people are and what will become of them.

Possibly the best novel I have ever read.

When I first opened this book and began reading it, I knew I was in good hands. The writing is beautiful. I finished it in two sittings, and immediately regretted reading it so fast, but I couldn't help it. It is stunningly captivating and putting it down is very close to impossible. I've read thousands of novels in my time, and I can't at the moment think of one written better than this one. Mr. Harrison's mastery of the English language is unequalled. The characters are fascinating and the storytelling flawless. And the suspense will have you reading at the edge of your seat. Also check out 'Break and Enter' and 'Manhattan Nocturne', both also works of art. But 'Bodies Electric' will always be my favorite. My guess is; if you read this one, you will be desperately hunting for everything else he's written, and you won't be disappointed when you find them.

Fantastic! That's what I could only say to you guys without any chronicle backpains. I suffered a badback again last week and had to lie down in bed for 4 days. "Bodies Electric" had lightened my painful suffering for two days and enlightened me in the meantime. When I finished it, I could not help but shaking my head awkwardly on my pillows with amazement and appreciation. This review is also my "Thank You!" note to Mr. Harrison for this wonderful and profound painkiller other than Motrin 800 mg and Flexril. The only thing that I did not quite enjoyed is that when I finished reading, the ending seems to be a bit rushed and obscure. Mr. Harrison so far has created two profound, memorable yet lonely characters: Jack Whiteman and Porter Wren. Both are fatally driven to be a "tragic hero" and a living example of "The heart is a lonely hunter." Both have made you, the reader, to look at the faceless lonely crowd out in the street, on the sidewalk, in the concrete jungles, with new way of looking angle, finally realized and visualized that behind every expressionless face and worldly success, some of them might still with passion, love, warmth, sympathy, fantasy, desire, weakness, helplessness, tenderness, hopes and dreams. Harrion's artwork might not be easily appreciated by those under 30 who are still unconciously or subconciously reading books with their own different moral standards, with their bias social values or pre-judgement to approach a book, trying to categorize a book with the superflous commercial brands: "Thriller, Genre," words like "Suspenseful, whodunit...." These pathetic marketing stuff in fact, all got nothing to do with Harrison's works. Because he only told us two thing: "No matter what and why, no matter how and when, with wife and children or not, we human beings still got a darker side and lonely inner self. The spur-of-the-moment or your behavior, no matter how reasonable or logical at the moment, or vise versa, sometimes might just ruin everything you have worked so hard to have achieved or reached." Reading Mr. Harrison's books with any social value or moral standard is a doomed wrong start albeit to appreciate his greatness.
