Fabulous!

I am studying for the GRE and before the tapes, I used several word lists etc. It was difficult to study that way. Now I just pop these tapes in my car on my way to work and on the way home and I'm entertained and learning at the same time! I've also come across many of these words in my practice exams! Well worth every penny!!

Typical foolish dialogue

Yet another poorly executed vocabulary tape set on the market. Here's the formula:
First pick a set of words. Even good ones are acceptable. It doesn't really matter though, because no one will actually end up learning them, anyway.
Second, hire a pair of silly, pun-happy Ken and Barbie speakers to introduce the words. Fill up as much time as possible with insipid banter and corny jokes. If possible, even allude to a love interest between them since that will keep the uneducated audience's attention. Don't spend too much time on the words themselves, because words are pretty boring, and what people really need is entertainment.
Lastly, remember that real-world examples would also be boring. Instead create silly stories with nutty characters who can introduce the new words. And by all means, place as much emphasis as is humanly possible on them, so the audience can recognize them. "You know, John, when you refuse to cooperate, you really (pause for effect) EXACERBATE (pause again just to let the word sink in) the whole situation." At all costs, the words should never be allowed to sound like an ordinary part of one's speech.
This is a real shame, because people who are serious about increasing their word power have nowhere else to turn. Every tape set I have found falls along these same lines. This may appeal to elementary or junior high students, but adults will have to look elsewhere.

A Great Tool!

I purchased these cassettes, along with the others in this series, when I was preparing to take the GRE. These tape have helped me immensely. I was able to retain much of the information because the words are presented in such an interesting and engaging fashion. I would recommend these tapes to anyone wanting to improve their vocabulary.

Great for beginning and advanced students of language

This set is an excellent way to learn Portuguese--for both novices and advanced students of other languages. It's the ideal way to apply your knowledge of Spanish or French to a new context. But Living Language also provides a fabulous start for the beginner. The tapes are excellent, and complement the books quite well. Great job!

I used this book and the accompanying tapes before taking a trip to Brasil for a week. Having a background in Spanish, I was able to easily use this course. It may move a little fast at the beginning for those without a Romance language background. But by the time I got to Brasil, I was able to understand about 20% of the conversation, more if I asked people to slow down and I was able to express the thoughts that I needed to and make my needs known. The tapes are helpful...do not use this without them because it is good to hear the pronunciation which is different from Spanish. All in all, this is a great course for the money if you are attentive and have Romance language background.

The book also talks about man/machine hybrids, brains being linked to computers, super-intelligent machines, biological weapons of war and even mind-control.

Where's the headless chicken I was promised?

For its time it was an OK book into what the future might be like ... got some things right but many things wrong. Thank goodness, no headless chickens grown in labs to satisfy the bloodlust of KFC or humans made into fish people complete with gills!... and luckily the environmental disasters predicted here have largely been avoided except for the occasional oil spill or tsunami wrecking nuke plants.

Richard Jewell's book is simply the most thorough and most authoritative study of the RKO movie production studio ever written. It covers every film chronologically and seems never to fail to offer insight into the thinking of its creators, and the performances of its stars. The films are supplemented with good photos...but it's the research required to produce such a volume that is really impressive. Jewell displays his love of film....and all that is required to produce high quality work....throughout his well written narrative. This is a comprehensive reference book really, that provides "a big picture" perspective of the work of one small, but mighty studio, during the Golden Age of Hollywood..

A Complete Guide to Spiritual Pathfinding

I bought this book years ago and am surprised to find no reviews for it on Amazon. I've come to treasure it as an excellent lucid guide to the "spiritual supermarket" in the West. In a time when, judging from popular dating sites, more people define themselves as "spiritual but not religious" than by any religion, a book like this is an indispensable sourcebook for pathways ranging from shamanism to Sufism, from Gnosticism to Gurdjief, from Native American beliefs to the New Physics.

John Lash was born in 1945 and is a wise and witty autodidact, poet, and mythographer. Almost half the book is a "Lexicon" -- essentially, a spiritual dictionary/encyclopedia, an excellent resource for one who reads books on spirituality and metaphysics. The rest of the book consists of essays on the New Age, tracing its historical origins; and annotated lists of classic books from Eastern Spirituality, classic books from Western Spirituality, and key works of New Age spirituality from 1900 to the Sixties and later. Lash also provides insightful guidance on syncretistic paths, and making your own path rather than following a traditional religion. This book was endorsed by Jacob Needleman, Professor of Philosophy, San Francisco State University, who called it "A remarkably coherent and helpful perspective on the contemporary spiritual ferment." Rick Fields, author of Chop Wood, Carry Water, called it "A wise and witty guide to the overstocked labyrinthine aisles of the spiritual supermarket." The Medieval Miracle- The Gothic Cathedral buildings and their windows.

In my opinion, this is the Bible on stained glass. IF you have toured the great Cathedrals of Europe, you cannot be without this book. As an Art History minor in College, I made three "Pilgrimages" to France, visiting all the major cathedrals in France except Rouen.I recently watched a 2014 episode of Rick Steves featuring Chartres. Over the time since I was there in 1975 and 78, there has been extensive cleaning of the "vitrines".
That is the French word for stained glass, as opposed to "fenetres" for windows. The difference now is breathtaking. The book explains every aspect of stained glass- the chemicals used to make the different colors from the 11th Century to the 20th Century. Some of the ancient windows still puzzle chemists as to HOW the colors were created. It is worth every penny. The original price was $75.00, I believe. Now, if you are planning a trip, with a decent digital camera, a pair of binoculars and a tripod, (you will need a telephoto lens) you will be blown away.

"Stained Glass" Review

"Stained Glass" is a fascinating revelation of an ancient art form in all of its illuminated glory. Being a visual person, I personally appreciated the near 500 colour photos cataloging the history of stained glass windows throughout the world.

Part one of the book discusses "The World of Stained Glass", looking at its relationship to architecture and various cultural elements. The second part of the book shares "The History of Stained Glass" from the perspective of artistic and social influences. And the third part of the book explains "How a Stained Glass Window is Made and Restored" using a step by step pictorial illustration.

This book is a must for every serious student of stained glass.

You might want to consider an historical fiction book showing life during the time of the building of the great cathedrals of the 12th century. The Pillars of the Earth

Dean of Early American Furniture

If you have any interest at all in Early American Furniture, buy this book! Mr. Sack is one of the most knowledgable experts on this subject. This book shows you the subtle differences in what makes a piece good and what makes a piece great. Having his experise on this subject is invaluable if you have any interest in searching for early American antique furniture. He learned from his father, who had an amazing eye, and Mr. Sack shows you what he has learned. He is reknowned as an expert in the field of Early American Furniture. It is a shame that this book is out of print and that one must spend a great deal for a used copy, but this book is worth every penny. Maybe we will get lucky and he will revise it again, but I would not hold my breath.

For Anyone Interested in Early American Furniture

It is a wonderful book full of the best examples of Early American furniture and detailing the differences between those examples of the good, the better and the best. Showing the photos side by side you can see the sweep of a really fine curve or carved shell versus the more pedestrian examples - although admittedly even the merely good furniture is truly wonderful. The amount of research represented by the sheer number of photos is really awe inspiring and you get to see them through the finely tuned eye of one of the very best dealers in Early American furniture. Whether you collect the furniture or just want eye candy it's a superb book.

Compared to The Naked Ape, the . . . Watching books (previous titles examined cats and dogs) are a step backwards for Morris. The title in hand offers questions and answers about the physiology and behavior of horses plus horse lore. Morris tells us that the horse's eye is one of the largest in the animal kingdom--bigger than the eye of the elephant or whale--and concludes that horses are nocturnal animals. On the subject of feeding, he notes that horses cannot vomit, that their natural feeding behavior is endless, varied grazing, that they are low-grade food specialists. There is material on cold-bloods, hot-bloods and breeds (207, of which 67 are ponies, 36 working horses, 104 sports horses). Discussing human-horse relationships, Morris states the secret of equine appeal is that the animal slaves for us while still looking noble. Illustrated.

About the Author
Desmond Morris was born in 1928. Educated at Birmingham and Oxford universities, he became the Curator of Mammals at London Zoo in 1959, a post he held for eight years. In 1967 he published The Naked Ape which has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and has changed the way we view our own species forever. An accomplished artist, tv presenter, film maker and writer, Desmond Morris's books have been published in over thirty-six countries.

This book is OK

This book has an interesting look at a horses behavior, but i felt that it lacked depth and a true understanding of what a horse is really like. Morris attempted explanations on why horses whinny, shake their head, and what their body language means, but it is more of a textbook answer than real experiences. I have been around horses my whole life, and some of these things Morris says are true some of the time. It is a good supplement to why a horse behaves the way he does, as long as you can add in your own interpretations.

Mr. Desmond's book displays near complete inexperience with hroses. I wonder if he's even ridden a horse before. Furthermore, I thought the book was actually geared more towards children rather than adults. He has interesting facts here and there, but that's all I can say about it!

When you can't afford the trip

When you can't afford the trip to observe herd of wile horses then all you need to afford is this book. Desmond Morris has been the authority on horse watching, people watching, cat watching and many other things. It's only been a matter of time till he took out all the words and kept what mattered...the forms. The pictures. Sure this is a great coffee table book to sit down and look at all the pretty ponies, but more so he captures the pictures that really count...not necessarily the ones where their manes are flowing and they look majestic, but the ones that capture that unspoken herd law.
