About the Author
The late David Conover was a dreamer. He passed away in 1983 but not before authoring four books. Once Upon an Island was first published in 1967 and gained international acclaim. David is also credited with "discovering" Norma Jean (aka Marilyn Monroe) while she was working in an airplane assembly plant in Long Beach, California where he was stationed as a photographer for the Army during World War II.

Once Upon an Island is an Incredible Book !

I bought this book on Amazon and LOVED reading how an inexperienced city person, with his wife, fell in love with an island and made a go of living there. If you think YOUR life is difficult, imagine buying a boat and riding out there when you never sailed a boat before.. Imagine trying to civilize an island with NO electricity, virtually no source of water, and all the challenges of the seasons.. This book was SO inspiring ! I heartily recommend it as a GREAT READ ! still the BIBLE of bike maintenance and repair

Though dated relative to the specific models explained, the operational essentials of bicycle repair are still the same, and this book covers it all, and I mean ALL. EVERY DETAIL, no matter how obscure or hidden is covered and depicted. When I got my hardback copy back in 1973, I was so impressed that I took everything apart on my brand new Schwinn Super Sport just to see how the parts, pieces and fittings looked, worked, felt, and adjusted and, especially, the specific tools required (I purchased and still have many of the basic tools to use on my present bike, on which I commute full-time), confident in Glenn's instructions on putting it all back together. I was right! I adjusted and positioned the handlebars and seat heights properly to fit me for safe and comfortable riding. I dis- and re-assembled front and rear wheel hub and bearing assemblies (lock washers, cones, cups, bearings, grease packing, axles), brakes (cable-tensioning/adjustment, lubrication, handle positioning), bottom bracket, front and rear derailleurs, pedals, sprocket clusters - I even confidently took apart the entire freewheel, including internals like tension springs and pawls. About the only thing I didn't try were spoke adjustments and replacements, and I didn't puncture my tire to try the patch/repair procedures. Glenn explained and pictured everything! I have never seen it's equal. Other books may be necessary for the few new (not necessarily better) features now offered on bicycles, but none cover bicycle maintenance and repair as well as Glenn's. Buy it! You'll be pleased you did.

Must have book on bike repair

Just like another reviewer said the book is dated to those models covered and does not have today's technology. However, many bikes today are made the same way and this book is an invaluable reference.

After checking out book after book in the local library and finding that most covered today's bikes and purchasing Park Tool's book since the library did not have this book in the catalogue, I began searching the internet and found several references to Glenn's.

Comparing the Park Tools book with its wonderful color pictures, I found it a bit skimpy compared in the explanation area to Glenn's detail. Also the Park book did not cover topics related to the bikes of yesterday that have simple components and did not cover how to disassemble a coaster brake or the front hubs on old style Schwinn type cruisers or even ball bearing bottom bracket servicing, as it only covers the modern bikes.

However, coaster brake and simple cruiser bikes have made a come back and most currently published books on the market do not cover servicing of simple coaster brakes or even a bearing bottom bracket as opposed to the modern cartridge bottom bracket.

Glenn's is not only an excellent reference for yesterday's bikes that are still around waiting for some TLC, it applies to today's simple bikes as well.

After paying the local shop $30 to overhaul my son's bendix brake and front hub on our recently acquired vintage Stingray, before I acquired a copy of Glenn's, I found out it was something so simple I could have done myself with reference to Glenn's. Now that I have a copy of Glenn's I will attempt the service myself on my 1995 Schwinn coaster brake cruiser.

While there are multiple publication dates for Glenn's, I purchased a later 1986 edition and do not know if this edition differs from the 1970s editions.

A Fascinating Introduction...

I bought my copy of Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe at a New York Renaissance Fair around 1984. Truly a fascinating introduction to an equally fascinating subject. Very interesting to trace the descents of the European royal families. I can only wish that the authors will reissue this material, along with the histories of some of the lesser houses, on CD-ROM.

The Great Getty is a Great Read

Robert Lenzer does an excellent job of showing every side of a very multi-faceted man. J. Paul Getty may be described as a horrible father, an unsurpassed lover, a great business man or a paranoid eccentric. Lenzer finds a way to portray all these descriptions and more in just 235 pages. Lenzer does not drag down the conversational tone with technical business terms. Although business was of central importance to Getty and, as such, of central importance to the book, Lenzer throws in pieces about Getty's personal life to keep the reader entertained.
My sole complaint is that sometimes Lenzer appears to be stretching to make the book longer. Many times Lenzer goes off on tangents, describing a particular favorite beach of Getty's, or giving the history of some of Getty Oil Company's rivals. It seems that Lenzer does not feel he has enough primary source material about Getty alone, so he makes the most of the sources he does have.
Despite the stretching, The Great Getty provides a few hours of entertainment (and often shock) as Lenzer shows us just what it might be like to walk in the shoes of the richest man in the world.

The Great Getty

ISBN 0451146999 - "People hate rich people." On the final page of the text of book (which is followed by over 50 pages of appendices), Lenzner quotes a Getty spouse with that statement. Perhaps it's true - it certainly seems Lenzner himself has an issue with at least one rich person: J. Paul Getty. Getty may have been every bit as terrible a person as he is painted in this book, but there is something not quite impersonal in the writing, as if Getty had somehow offended Lenzner and it seeped into the writing. In fact, Robert Lenzner was once an investment banker for Goldman, Sachs. Goldman, Sachs becomes part of the Getty story in 1983, when they were approached to find a "white knight" during the power struggle between Gordon Getty and the board of Getty Oil. Perhaps there's a connection there - it wouldn't be surprising, because the book takes a definite turn after Getty's death. For 290 pages, the book is about J. Paul Getty. It draws a portrait of a mean, selfish, self-centered, sex-obsessed, womanizing bigamist who clings to pennies while rolling in dough. Suddenly, the old man is dead and over the next 23 pages, we read how much better are the sons. I come to the conclusion that Lenzner possibly met the younger Gettys, heard tales of the terrible man who gave them life - and millions upon millions of dollars - and wrote a book that told their tale. Without that personal connection, if it doesn't exist, I have a hard time understanding the tone of the book.

J. Paul Getty, born to a loving but not affectionate set of parents, has the luck - good or bad - to have George Getty as his father. And George has the luck to wander into the oilfields when his son is eight years old and when oil is a young business. The stage is set for J. Paul, who will eventually become the richest man in the world. Of course, to get there, he has to get through his father. When his father dies, he's got to get through his mother. The way he deals with his mother is heartlessly business-like but Mother Getty is no fool and fights back as meanly as her son fights her. While he works on that, he seems to work at little else but women.

Getty's marriages overlap, some of his children are questionably legitimate and his empire grows. When he finally has control of the business his father began, he is obsessive about every last detail and dime. His business obsession leaves little room for caring about his children, who are portrayed as unloved and necessary, but not particularly wanted, heirs. Through it all runs the only story that would matter to Getty - business. It seems there's not a trick in the book that Getty wouldn't try to gain control, power and money, and to keep it. When his grandson is kidnapped, Getty's response is to cling to his money and refuse to pay the ransom. He doesn't give in when the kidnappers threaten to dice the boy up and send him home in pieces, either. Until they actually send home a piece of him, Grandpa Getty tries pretty much anything to keep as much money as possible rather than pay up and secure his safety.

In the end, I don't think I know any more about the man than I did before. Ann Getty, wife of Gordon, is pronounced the best Getty ever - and that she was Lenzner's connection to the family is noted in the preface. It hardly gives the author credibility. If there's another book about Getty that you can get your hands on, you might try that one. This one feels too mean-spirited to be accurate. The only nice thing Lenzner's got to say about the man is the title - unless you count the references to his skills as a lover, it's all downhill from there.

An excellent, defining book

Who is Georgia O'Keeffe? Why did she paint those flowers so HUGE? Why did she paint things of the desert? What kind of relationships did she have? Why is New Mexico so important?

Ask no longer. The answers to all those questions and so much more are found right here in "The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe" just as the title indicates. I love this book! I have poured and poured through it, reading excerpts of her life, about her art. Even the controversies are here. Wouldn't you know that stories and explanations of such an icon of both art and a bold way to live one's life would be here. What a woman! What an artisan!

But such a life and resulting art were not without pain. She and Alfred Stieglitz (her husband and famous photographer) had a controversial relationship (especially for the time period). They practically ripped their clothes off at their first meeting. He had to have this woman (they eventually married after his divorce), but artist that he was, he also had to have other women. His unfaithfulness was the one thing that could unravel this strong woman. But, oh my! She, too, was unfaithful, especially after moving to New Mexico, the home of her heart.

During the time I taught art history at the high school level, I used this book for information about Georgia O'Keeffe. Everything I needed was here, including fascinating personal stories from childhood to the productive and relatively peaceful (not boring!) years in New Mexico. How her art developed from the usual realistic views of nature and places to the very personal O'Keeffe viewpoint are here. Stieglitz was an essential catalyst. Her relationships with both friends and fellow artists are illuminated.

If there is a better book about O'Keeffe, I hope I discover it. As for me and now, "The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe" is highly recommended for its personal stories, explanations of her art, and evaluations of both.

A Successful Look at O'Keeffe

Surely it is difficult to sift through an artist's life and write about only the meaningful moments/events. Castro does a good job with this, including what is important and omitting the tedious. Her art criticism is simple and easy to understand and her approach seems balanced. My major complaint with the book is that while she may discuss a painting on page 15, it may well appear on page 200 - with no note or appendix making it possible to find the plate.

If you've been an O'keeffe fan for a long time this book will lack of new and interesting facts about her life and art. It is a "good" book, but it works only for people that have just discovered O'keeffe's greatness.

A Must have book for any library bookshelf

I have owned numerous copies of this wonderkind book for years and keep giving copies away to friends and family.

While Mr. Baring Gould, doubtless no longer alive, was not able to corral every good one of his era, the illustrations by Andre Domin, Aubrey Beardsley, and Edward Lear form delightful backdrops to the saucy verses he assembled.

And perhaps best, the limmerick format encourages emulation by everyone with an event to write a poem to celebrate or a group of people who just like to laugh!

In fact, I have assembled several from his and other sources which I have tucked between the covers of my present copy, just so I can quickly find favorites to cite for such occasions.

This is a truly visually beautiful book. Reading this book made me wish that I could live such an "herbal" lifestyle. So glad I purchased this book to add to my vast Herb Book collection. The third book by Emelie Tolley. I also have 10 years of Emelie Tolleys Herb Calenders, unfortunately no longer published. Herbal Gifts are great to give especially at Christmas and this book contains some great gift ideas.
