So-so

This book wasn't as large and the homes featured in it weren't as fresh and interesting as I had hoped. But I love all aspects of cottage design, from home interiors to exteriors. Thanks to another review, I picked up two other cottage books that do a great job. One is Second Home from the Better Homes and Gardens editors----------I love Second Home because it takes me on tours of cottages around the country while also giving me tips I can use for decorating or even building. It's a great book for just paging through also. Big photos, lots of information but yet it quick to read. I also like The Cabin-----------It's a beautiful book to look at but it doesn't offer the wealth of information that Second Home does.

Smaller than I expected

This book was smaller than I expected. A small book with lots of small pictures. Kind of disappointing. Other books on cottages and second homes do the job getter. I have found these are my favorites:
* Second Home: Finding Your Place in the Fun. This is comprehensive, large, with great shots of homes in all styles and shots of their settings too. Great to look at but filled with tips on everyting from finding a location to decorating.
* The Cabin. Gorgeous, big pictures, lots of variety in the cabins shown. Not a lot in the way of information. But pretty.

Loved it

I found this book and also American Country Details in a good bookshop in my city. I was lucky as I think they were 'one-offs' - I haven't seen them in the same shop since, never anywhere else, and I haven't seen any of the other titles by Ms Emmerling. Love both of the books. The best part is that the ideas are so entirely adaptable whatever country you live in, according to where you live, and what you like (i.e. if I liked flags, I would probably use an Australian one, not the American). However these are terrific, I especially enjoyed the notes at the back of "Cottages". The only problem is that they don't seem to be readily available in Queensland! Good work.

The discovery and conquest of the New World changed the Old World forever, from economy and diet to the concept of personal freedom. Anthropologist Weatherford, author of Tribes on the Hill , examines the many contributions made by New World natives. Exploited in the mines of Peru and Mexico, Indian laborers produced the gold and silver that financed the rise of modern Europe. Weatherford points out that Indians were expert pharmacologists; they knew how to prevent goiter and scurvy, used ipecac and quinine. Their foods, especially the potato, revolutionalized European agriculture; they introduced chocolate, chili peppers and cocaine. Indian social organization was truly democratic, unlike the classic democracies in Europe, and Weatherford notes the connection with modern federal systems. YA-- Beginning with a clever title and continuing throughout the book, Weatherford lists the tremendous contributions which have been made by the Indian civilizations of the Americas to world culture. He shows the impact of gold and silver, agricultural techniques, medicine, and government on European history. The book makes for fascinating, thought-provoking reading, showing that Locke and Rousseau were both influenced by the concepts of power and government held by the people of the Americas before they produced their great documents of the Enlightment. Weatherford also shows how the spread of the potato to Europe saved many lives from the malnutrition which had haunted them when grain crops had previously failed. He has a far-reaching scope and even suggests a fascinating theory on the purpose of Machu Picchu. By showing how the world was changed through these contributions, the author gives a greater appreciation of the Indians of America to readers. A fine synthesis book for global studies programs as well as American history.

Wonderful!

I found this to be one of the most informative books I've ever read, and I've read most of the classics.

When you read this book you must understand that the old adage that history is written by the conquerors is very true as is painfully illustrated in this book.

I'm of mixed Caucasion and American Indian descent. Many of the questions that I've wondered about my whole life were answered in this book. Where did all of the Inca gold go to? Why isn't Spain a major world power? Why does it seem as though most foods are native to the Americas? These are questions that are "skirted" in popular history books, giving all of the stability of modern life to the credit of "civilized" Europeans. As for the quesiton of democracy, the United States is in no sense the same type of democracy as ancient Greece (which was really a republic). If you're open minded an logical this book will blow your mind.

Great food (no pun intended) for thought!

"Indian Givers" presents information and ideas that are too often overlooked in our day-to-day thinking about what we have, and where those things came from. Weaterford does a grand job of introducing a wide variety of topics that the Indians of the Americas have developed or contributed to the modern world. As a reader you should we forewarned, however, that Weatherford has a tendency to occasionally push a discussion to the point of being overly biased.
Weatherford raises issues such as American Indians' contributions to the geopolitical influence of American silver and gold on the rest of the world...toward the end of that discussion it appears that the thread of connection between Indians' contributions and eventual impact of gold and silver is thin at best.
There are extremely valuable discussions about the diversity and impact of food, medicinal, and other plants. Those probably had a much larger impact on the rest of the world than did any of their other contributions. Consider the impact of potatoes, corn, many species of beans, peanuts, and long-fiber cotton on the rest of the world. I'm not sure that I agree with Weatherford on this...but he goes as far as to suggest that the Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century was driven by the importation of long-fiber cotton from the Americas to Europe.
Weatherford also discusses the contributions of Indians of the Americas to political philosophy, including the framing of the Constitution of the United States. I believe there is some significance to that, but perhaps not as much as Weatherford suggests.
Regardless of those kinds of potential academic disagreements and the periodic forays into speculation by the author, "Indian Givers" remains a book well worth reading.
This would be a great book for anyone interested in the culture and history of the Indians of the Americas, or for those with interest in ethnobotany, the imact of the Indians of the Americas on the rest of the world, or the impact of the rest of the world on the Indians of the Americas (disease, conquests, etc. -- sad business, that!)
A good book, but a litte to speculative in some parts for me to award it 5 stars...definitely a strong 4 stars though.
I'm grateful for all the benefits I enjoy that came from the Indians of the Americas.

A great book!

I found this book in the bookstore at Mesa Verde National Monument, which is a terrific site near Cortez, Colorado. I can add very little to the other reviews I have seen except to say that this well-written, fascinating, easy-to-read & highly entertaining book will fill in so many of the missing pieces in everyone's history education, and that it is a superb thinking tool. It will help to cleanse your mind of all those silly, cherished, romantic notions and myths that most of us were spoon fed in public school or in the movie theatres. This book is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in how profoundly the Indians of the New World influenced our world, and in a saner educational system, this little book would be required reading for all students. Every chapter would make an excellent educational film of its own.

The Ultimate Answer, This is it !

I have lost weight all of my life. I have lost well over 500 pounds. (20 to 30 pounds per year) Gain, lose, gain lose; I took comfort in knowing the bears do it. The only problem as Deepak notes is that there is scientific evidence that yo yo weight control is not good for your health. With the exception of those who are clinically obese, over 25% above the normal weight for your body type, the yo yo'er is a big risk. I have successfully done just about every diet out there. The only problem is that each of them is based on excluding a food group out of your diet. After a while you crave that food group.
Talk about the "Power of Coincidence" part of another one of Deepak's books, I was at a party, and this girl who was in great shape said, "It's all about moderation and exercise" I heard that from others who have always been in great shape all their lives. The only problem is that I can't think about restricting portions or counting calories. Then along comes Deepak with the perfect answer. His program is simple, for the first two weeks only eat when you are truly hungry. He identifies the different levels of hunger, and assigns them a number. 0-1 is the first level. You feel real hunger, it is gnawing at you. This is the time when your body is prepared to assimilate food. Then you have the levels in between which is when we eat when we are not truly hungry. Maybe because it is dinnertime, or maybe because we have emotional needs that are not being met, and we are substituting food. Emotional eating as a substitute. When we are truly hungry at level 0-1, we then eat, and concentrate on what we are eating. Don't watch TV, don't talk just absorb the food. Almost on a spiritual level, you are welcoming the nutrition into your body, as compared to watching TV, talking on the phone, and scratching the cat while you are eating :-) then when you are done, you feel frustrated because you never had the "experience" of eating. In frustration you go back and eat some more. What he tells you to do is to eat until you reach level 6, which is the level that you are completely satisfied, but not over stuffed. He tells us to eat until our stomachs are about three quarters full. This is not deprivation, it is satisfaction. Furthermore, he is not telling us what to eat. When you body is telling you it is time to eat pasta, eat it. Don't over eat it, just enough until you are satisfied. This really works. I just went through the Thanksgiving holiday, even over eating on Thanksgiving, having chocolate cake on another night, and ice cream on another. All the while eating the way he taught me on the others. I am down 4 pounds over the holidays, and now I am down 5 1/2. These are no effort results. Who cares how long it takes.
Here is another key component. After the first two weeks, when he tells you to listen to your body, feel your stomach, and eat only when you are hungry, he leads you into week 3 with eating your biggest meal in the middle of the day. In Europe this is a tradition. During the morning, you should eat very little, if at all. I do this also, but I listen to my body, and if I am entering into a heavy labor day, I eat a hearty breakfast. If I am not hungry in the morning, I have green tea with mint, and seasoned with non-fat milk. Then for dinner, I eat light also, which is his recommendation. Either soup with a few pieces of toast. (Whole GRAIN toast is the most wholesome and dietetic) or I will have a light salad, or I will have whole grain cereal with non fat milk, fresh fruit or Del Monte brand quality canned fruit . So my overall day is one of fewer calories, but never am I sacrificing my pleasure. If my body says, I am at level 0-1 I eat. I don't sit down to dinner at 5 or 6 pm just because it is dinnertime and eat. If I am not hungry, I don't eat. Well duh, why have I been cramming a full meal into my body all along, even when I am not hungry, just because it is "dinner time". He says a pound a week is what to expect. With more exercise, expect more. Here is where he shines again. He gives us several Yoga poses that we are supposed to get into and hold for 5 seconds. Increase flexibility, strength, stamina, balance and generate a sense of well being in only 10 or 15 minutes. You can repeat them as you grow.
Now let me get onto something that is just as important. I am 55 years of age. Recently I started having what is known as Acid Reflux Disease. I am normally a perfectly healthy person. What I have been experiencing is waking up in the night, with gas trying to leave my body, but because I have been eating dinner at 8pm, then having a double chocolate pudding at 10:30 or 11pm, I have been having that problem. Gas trying to leave my body, being blocked by food in the way. So it pushes the food up above the esophogeal sphincter, burning the lining with stomach acid, and that is what they mean by acid reflux. No matter what I ate late it was a problem. Then I tried Deepak's eating routine as spelled out in this book, and I have not had even one single night of this problem. Forget taking medicine to mask the symptom, fix the problem instead. I even had Gastritis one night, where I woke up with SHARP gas pains in the upper part of my stomach area, and was wondering if I was having heart problems. I read in Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss about the causes, symptoms and treatment of, and was great relieved to see it was gastritis. (I highly, highly recommend Back to Eden as well)
So what did Dr. Chopra do with this book? He gave me back health, and gave me a way to lose weight for the rest of my life. A pound a week is fine with me. I'm not deprived in any way; I simply am no longer over eating. As a matter of fact the light mornings, and or light evenings are a miracle cure for a weight problem. Now I look and say, hey, be in perfect shape by next fall, no problem. I can do this forever. Maybe I can up my exercise routine and get there even faster.
By the way he calls the book "Perfect Weight" because he is not interested in you being skinny. He wants you to pick out the weight you want to be, and to be happy at that weight. (As long as the number is not at the level of obesity) When you are happy at a certain weight, your body shows it. You walk it, talk it, and exhume it. Like they say, when you look good, you feel good.
Including ginger in your diet, and sipping hot water during the day, I haven't done that yet, so ignore the skeptics. I'm perfectly happy with doing the rest of the program. I know I will introduce more ginger into my diet, and I will include more Green tea with mint very hot as a means of sipping hot water. Hey the rest of the program works, why not that part too.
This program is great. I know how to lose 6 pounds in a week, only to grow tired of the regimen. I think I will do this instead, and live a little now, while I am on the pathway to health and happiness. I highly, highly recommend this book. Thanks for your time.

The information in this book will change my life

The information in this book is a gift.

It goes beyond most books that talk about what to eat (although that is very important). This book talks about HOW to eat which I can see now is just as important.

My favorite part is the one on exercise. I am SO HAPPY to hear we don't have to kill ourselves to be fit and healthy. I've always gravitated towards yoga and dance and walking as exercise. In the back of my mind I always thought "maybe I should be doing something more strenuous". Well, not true! I don't have the energy to and yoga fills the bill in terms of making me more energetic and vital. I don't really need to do more strenuous exercise because my days are filled with chores already. I am doing fine.

And this whole idea of respecting your personal physiology...what a novel idea!

I've just learned so much on how to improve my health. I am grateful.

A solution

I have finally found the solution to dieting. This is a way to live and become healthy. Find your body type, listen to your body and be grateful. I was gaining weight with my gym's diet and work out plan. I turned to this, stopped killing myself at the gym, made some diet adjustments for my Body type and the weight is starting to shift. . Thank you Deepak!

Good student, but could try harder

Over here in England, we are just beginning to be included in the Martha Stewart 'empire'. (Of cousre we have our own home grown lifestyle gurus, but I think a toughie like Martha could wipe the floor with the lot of them!) As a keen gardener I was eager to get my hands on this book to learn more about American gardening plants and styles, and ideas; to my surprise this book is in essence a rehash of the work of the very English Penelope Hobhouse, Rosemary Verey and Christopher Lloyd! Still, a good book, and a good read, despite the photographic quality not being up to the usual standards for garden books.
Basically, it's good for inspiring beginners; however, if you want to garden in 'le style anglais' go to straight Penelope Hobhouse. As I believe they say in the States - she's got it going on!

Pretty pictures, with little actual instruction.

Martha is the queen of home however, This book is very fishy. There is not one paragraph about irrigation. I'm not an expert but I have several acres of gardens and after soil, watering is the number one thing to understand. It is not even in the index, nor is watering. This leads me to believe that Martha did not grow these plants, but rather and army of hired staff put them in the ground. Her own daughter Alexis said there were no parties, no nothing. That at " Halloween Martha turned the lights out and pretended to not be home and gave the kids pennies to annoy them." Martha made Alexis wrap her own Christmas gifts. How FAKE!!! There is even an interview in her bio by a photographer who said he cussed Martha and her husband out because they showed up dressed up to a wedding and were going to take photos for her book and claim credit but she had nothing to do with creating the wedding. Nothing!

This book is for pictures of Martha's garden and the photos are dated. This is not an instructional book. She talks about how much she loves this plant and how pretty they are and how she thought of the idea, but she does not explain things. The recipes are not tested. Food critics have tried them and they are not valid recipes the measurements and ingredients are lacking. But as always, there are some great ideas to get started here.

You might be surprised . . .

Don't automatically assume that this is just another slick, coffee-table book. I've owned more gardening books that I care to admit and during a recent 'clean-out' and general overhaul of my gardening library, this is one of the few books that stayed on my shelf. There are literally dozens of backyard gardening missives with bibliographies that read like a who's who of horticultural academia. In other words, so many out there are just passing around the same old information with a different cover page. Sure, Martha undoubtedly has hired assistance that most of us can only drool over, but she still has legitimate experience to offer which is what helps to separate this book from many of it's more mundane peers. She also takes the time to focus on heirloom varieties as well as offering the option of the organic approach (which she appears to favor) as well as chemical-based alternatives. It surely doesn't hurt that there are pages packed with almost unbelievable profusion whether it be from the flower or vegetable gardens, the property is truly a work of art, even if it is not by Martha's hand alone. This is the heady stuff of any gardeners wildest imagination come true and no matter whether or not it is attainable by the majority of us, it is a heavy dose of inspiration combined with practical and legitimately useful information as a welcome bonus. Well worth the read.

The longest and costliest Anglo-American operation in the WW II European theater, the Italian campaign was beset by controversy: the slaughter of the 36th U.S. Division at the Rapido, the bombing of Monte Cassino, General Mark Clark's exclusion of the British from the capture of Rome. Morris's vigorous narrative is shaped around a harsh but well-supported indictment of Allied generalship in Italy, especially of the insistence on attacking the Germans where they were strongest. Mark Clark is presented as a publicity hound, mistrustful of British fighting prowess; Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery as noncooperative and dilatory; and overall theater commander Field Marshal Harold Alexander as weak-willed and indecisive. Morris puts far more emphasis on the purely Italian dimension of the campaign than has any other historian to date, analyzing the weaknesses of the organized Italian military effort, the growing strength of the partisans and the suffering visited on the populace. The Allies, in the name of liberation, killed more Italians than the Germans did. Interesting but wildly opinionated history

I happened on this book by chance and was intrigued, since it is more recent than many of the books about the campaign that was the stepchild of all the European Theater of Operations (ETO) drives. The campaign began with an invasion of Sicily in July of 1943 that had no real strategic objectives other than to demonstrate to Stalin that the Western allies were doing something helpful. After the conquest of North Africa, Roosevelt and Churchill and their military advisors realized that they would not be ready for a cross channel invasion of France until 1944, and did not want to move all their armies to England to await the invasion, so they settled on an invasion of Sicily. That lead to the decision to invade the mainland in September, with the intitial plan to just liberate southern Italy to have access to the port of Naples and the airfields in the south, which would give bomber forces access to southern Germany and the Balkans, otherwise out of reach from bases in England.

Churchill saw some value in the campaign, hoping that it would lead eventually to Allied occupation of the Balkans and prempting the Red Army from its advances through Eastern Europe. But the Americans always wanted priority to go to the invasion of France, and consistently gave short shrift to the Italian campaign. Nonetheless, it continued right up until the end of the war, at a high cost in casualties and a slow slog through mud and mountains.

Eric Morris does a nice job of detailing the major battles and the units involved, with a fair amount of individual episodes and stories. In this, he is probably better than earlier writers on the topic and in terms of of detail it is better than most other accounts of the campaign that I have read.

However, to get this you have to wade through an enormous quantity of negative writing about the commanders involved, the planning (or lack thereof) of the battles and goals, the contentious relationships between the British and the Americans and a whole host of other items. He accuses the Indian troops and French Goumiers of large scale looting and rape of Italian civilians, claims that Italian civilians were worse off under Allied occupation than German occupation, and dismisses the Italian resistance movement as contributing little or no military impact and made up of people who mainly evaded the labor draft or hoped to reap benefits after the war.

It's worth noting that most of these ideas have been espoused from time to time by other writers in this area. Mark Clark most likely was a publicity hound whose ego got in the way of serious military planning, and whose ideas sent many men to their death that did not need to. The weaknesses of Alexander as a theater commander, and the mutual dislike of the British and American commanders did show up in Sicily, played out in Italy, and the friction continued until the end of the war. Civilians probably suffered unnecessarily from bombings that did not really advance the military goals they were supposed to support. The topic of the military role of the Italian resistance (as was the case of the French resistance) continues to be debated to this day, although Morris completely misses the point that in both cases it had a political importance that outweighed its military impact.

In these as in the comments about the rapes, Morris brings almost no evidence to support his points. His bibliography is a page and a half long, and consists entirely of English language sources, mostly memoirs and official histories. He does not list any primary source evidence (although he quotes some in his footnotes), German language sources, or Italian language sources. He says has been writing about this topic for a while, and has published some earlier books on aspects of the campaign. His book is 52 chapters long, and has only a handful of footnotes for each chapter. Some of the more contentious assertions are supported only by such items as "Author interview with a Fifth Army staff officer who wishes to remain anonymous".

In fairness, I want to point out that the author has provided citations to some British official papers (without even the most basic context), very good maps and photographs, a series of appendices which detail orders of battle and terms used, so that there is quite a bit of helpful information. But it's very hard to tell which of the information is good, and which of it represents just the author's prejudices. Opinion per se is not bad, but unsupported opinion makes a reader question the whole enterprise. It does not help his case (but it may not be his fault) that there are way too many typos, missing words, and misspelled given names and place names in the book.

I would not recommend this for people looking for an introduction to the topic. If the book is read with care and some prior knowledge, there is much to be gained from reading it. Otherwise: caveat lector.

She celebrated birthdays and saints days and baptisms and all the popular holidays. The authors have divided the book into a cycle of twelve fiestas, among them the Posadas (at Christmas), the Day of the Dead, the Mexican national holidays, and a gala celebration called "The Meal of the Broad Tablecloths". Guadalupe Rivera is an authority on preColombian culture and daughter to Latin America's most celebrated and controversial painter, Diego Rivera.

Marie-Pierre colle is the author or co-author of several books, including Frida's Fiestas: Recipes and Reminiscences of Life with Frida Kahlo and Mexico: Houses of the Pacific. Of Mexican-French heritage, she began her career as a journalist in New York and has worked for such magazines as Vogue, House & Garden, and Conde Nast Traveler. She currently resides in Mexico.
Alfonso Alfaro is the director of the Institute of Investigation of Artes de Mexico. A doctor of anthropology at the Sorbonne, he is the author or coauthor of several books published in Mexico.

Beautiful and Tasty Addition to my Frida Kahlo Library

I'm a huge Frida Kahlo fan, and this is much more than a mere recipe book. While Hayden Herrera's biography gave us the flavor of Frida's life, Frida's Fiestas gives us the flavor of her kitchen, bringing those of us who wish to know more about the artist and the woman just a little bit closer to sharing and understanding her life. Frida celebrated life to it's fullest; her favorite recipes and the artistic way they are presented on the pages of this book are a celebration as well. Viva la Vida!

Adding a culinary aspect of Frida's life was an incredible idea! Lupe Marin does an excellent job in sharing the secrets of popular Mexican food and how they influenced the art and persona of Frida Kahlo. This book definitely opens the senses to sensual recipies you could share with friends and significant others!

So far, SO good!

Received this book as a gift. The recipes look great and I tried the first one today: baked chilaquiles with green tomatillo sauce. Wow, what a winner!

Just the sauce alone way exceeded expectations (I plan to use it separately as a dip, enchilada sauce, on a fresh hot corn tortilla or even as salad dressing -- it was delicious).

The dish came together easily and was just awesome. I halved it and it was fine.

General note about the recipes in this book: if you need really exact directions, it may not be for you. A recipe might say 'put a little bit of sauce in the bottom of the pan.' How much is 'a little bit' of sauce? You need to be comfortable with a certain amount of vagueness in your recipes. It's manageable or even preferable if you're pretty comfortable in the kitchen, but if you require precision in your recipe instruction, this may not be the book for you.

Enjoyed the stories and pics. It's a lovely book, especially if you admire Frida. Thumbs up.

This was not exactly what I thought it was.....It is mostly how to take old shoes, deconstruct, and put back with some reused parts and some new parts. There are some good ideas. But i was still disappointed. Also, the handbag section is only 13 pages, most of that is large illustrations of how to, again, take an old handbag, deconstruct, reuse some parts with new........ If you get this book cheap, then it is ok.

The book is an illustrated history of the development of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger (Shrike),a German Second World War single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank in the late 1930s. Powered by a radial engine, the 190 had ample power and was able to lift larger loads than its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109. A Slim but Enjoyable Reference

This was the first volume I purchased of the series, and it helped convince me I wanted the others. The text is pleasant, factual, and readable, covering the development history and most of the variations. Many of the photos can be found reprinted in all the standard books on the Fw 190. I bought it mainly for the illustrations by Rikyu Watanabe, and they're excellent.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for profile art, but if I am, I don't think I'm alone. Profiles of machinery seem to strike a primal chord in some people, somehow; it can't be genetic, but there's something to them that grabs me. And when it comes to profile art, Rikyu Watanabe -- himself a former WWII flier for Japan -- stands with the best of his time, or even today.

These days, it's fairly easy to produce a nice profile. People do it all the time; there are websites and forums with tutorials. You can download line art and get started with Photoshop. But this book was published in 1980 -- hard to believe that's 30 years ago! -- and back then you had to do it the hard way, on paper.

Watanabe did it, and he excelled. This volume has a little less in the full-color profile department than some. The big one is an Fw 190A-4, printed on a three-page-wide foldout. There are two-page foldouts of an Fw 190A-5, and Fw 190D-9, and the Ta 152-H1. The rest is line drawings, including nice cutaways of both the final A-series, the A-8, and the ultimate Fw fighter, the Ta 152H-1. A cutaway of the BMW 801 radial engine and the cockpit diagram are nice, though a little simple by modern standards.

Of the other line drawings, the best are the four-views (top and bottom, front and back) of the A-8 in 1/46 scale, and the five-views (top and bottom, front and back, and port side profile, in 1/56 scale) of the D-9 and Ta 152H. These are supplemented by a number of line drawn profiles in 1/42 scale.

In summary, while it has good data, that's nothing you can't find elsewhere -- or even free, on the web, now. This book is about the art, and I think it's well worth the relatively low used price.

In the 1980s, Jane's of London initiated an art project. It teamed great writers and a magician of light and shadow to profile famous WW II airplanes- of which there were more than a few- while telling combat episodes of their pilots. Text is factual and crisp, development followed by operational introduction then operational history. Rikyu Watanabe is the artist; every drawing clear and delicate as if captured in a hologram. All were outstanding examples of fine artwork.
FW 190: Page 5 of shows the BMW 801 air-cooled engine in cutaway; even non-engineers can appreciate the intricacy of such a compact engine producing 1400 horsepower. Page 10 opens to a 3 screen foldout of a quiescent A-4 from 1943. Robert Grinsell tells of a 1937 effort to produce a 'backup fighter' to the ME 109. After failing to inspire, a larger engine produced acceptable results, and the machine continued to morph into a light bomber, tank destroyer, high-altitude interceptor, night fighter - you name it. The A-8 drawings on p. 20-21 illustrate the apogee of that thinking. Pay attention to the cutaways; try to imagine fighting from the cramped confines of these fearsome machines.
There are more foldouts on p. 26-28 of the version with water-cooled engine, and progression showing the stretched nose to accommodate the different physical dimensions and wings to support it. As 1944 ran out, the infrastructure for aviation fell apart and the German Air Force was steamrollered by Allied forces.

Very Nice book!

This book has amazing artwork in it from one of WW2s infamous fighters.Rikyu Watanabe is amazing! This book also has a large full color centerfold, and many color plates. Includes a cockpit diagram. A must for any Focke-Wulf nut!
