The Ann Woodward Story - A Look at the Rich and Powerful and the Influence they have over the Media, Justice System, and General
By Linda
The first thing I want to make clear as a reviewer is that I am not knowledge about the “real” people involved in Dommick Dunne’s novels. A lot of people read the novels and can immediately pinpoint the society individuals they are based off of. I was not one of them, and yet I still found this novel and Dunne’s other books to be an extremely honest and witty look at the rich and powerful and the influence they have over the media, justice system, and general public.
The Two Mrs. Greenvilles has an amazingly well-developed cast of supporting characters that really give life to the novel. With most of these people, I couldn’t decide whether I loved them or found them to be disgusting. But Dunne helped me understand them to some extent and caused me to experience sympathies I never thought I would have.
This novel looks at the relationship of Ann and Billy Woodward, a couple I have long been fascinated with. As Ann tries to bring herself further into the old money society groups, her marriage to Billy begins to deteriorate. I recommend that after you read this novel, you watch the Woodward story on ID Network’s A Crime to Remember Season 1. The narrator in that episode on the Woodward’s feels like it could be the narrator from this book – and they both could very well be based on Truman Capote.

Based On A True Strory, It's Excellent
By Ken T.
Closely based on the true story of the Woodwards in Oyster Bay, Long Island, Mr. Dunne uses their real first names, as he does the name of the house. Other characters are thinly veiled.
Ann came from a rather poor family in Kansas, was a show girl for a while, but had her sights set on marrying into the very rich. Given her roots and attitude, she was never accepted by her husband's family, Thinking only of money and social status, many saw through her, as did her husband eventually. The marriage becomes completely fragmented and her solution to the problem is to do him in. Ann literally gets away with murder, thanks to her Mother in Law.
Though shunned by all society afterward, including family. The family stands by her to avoid scandal and protect their social status. For the next 20 years her personal life becomes more in shambles than her married life ever was. I'll not go further less I put a spoiler into this. I don't want to do that.
Mr. Dunne has done very well in taking a mostly factual story and turning it into a novel. I live on Long Island and am very familiar with the story and how very shallow the super rich, which dominated the North Shore were. I suppose in that regard the novel held extra interest. Still, the book is an enthralling read. In the end, one finds it somewhat difficult to feel for Ann Grenville, given her persona through the years. Her fate in the end comes about after reading a short article written by Basil Price. Mr. Price is actually Truman Capote.
One note from the past, though everyone has mostly all passed on. The Playhouse still stands today. It is used and in very good condition. In a bit of irony, given what had happened there, it has been a functioning chapel for many years. Sold to priests by Ann many years ago. No one really wanted it as a residence, given it's history.

An excellent read about a high society murder
By Lady Lisa
An excellent read about the high-society murder of Billy Grenville by his wife Ann, who allegedly mistook him for an intruder at their Long Island estate. Mr. Dunne provides a glimpse into the fabulous and posh world of New York blue bloods who get invaded by a hot-tempered social climber named Ann who marries into the Grenville clan. This story would have been intriguing enough even if it hadn't been based on a true story.
