An epic photo-essay of the U-Boat war.

There is no comparable record of the war at sea - especially the U-Boat war at sea, if only because no similar collection of photographs exist. The author, who was not a submariner, was ordered to join the crew of a U-Boat and to bring back photographs for propaganda purposes. Very soon he became appalled by what he saw and, using his unlimited stocks of film, began to photograph everything around him. Eventually he secreted away over 5,000 photographs until the war was over.

More than 200 of those photographs are reproduced here as Buchheim takes us on a journey that is no joy-ride. Instead it is a blow by blow account of the lives of men inside their tin coffins who's only real orders were to kill or be killed. It is an incredible account of war inside a U-Boat and an excellent read.

Das Boot: The Real Story

Buchenheim's book serves to remind the public that tragic novels like "Das Boot" are not merely fiction. No one "writes" stories like these -- someone had to have actually LIVED the horror.
The submarine arm of the Kriegsmarine suffered 75% fatalities during WW II. By the end of the war, the average age of a U-Boat captain was about 20, and crews were often pre-pubescent children -- too young to even grow beards. Brave, inexperienced children in outmoded boats, with heads filled with Nazi Reich propaganda, who faced battle-hardened Allied commanders more than twice their age. They were little more than depth-charge fodder. As a journalist for that propaganda ministry, Buchenheim came to know the real truth and the real horror of submarine warfare.
U-Boat crews have been maligned in history. Buchenheim reminds us that, like submariners of all nations, they were exceptionally brave young men who often went to sea knowing they had little or no ! chance of survival.
Buchenheim is very critical of Doenitz and the Wermacht/Kriegsmarine High Command in this outstanding first person account of World War II through the German eyes.

The photos in this book are lovely, and some of the theme ideas are nice, but honestly, the recipes didn't do much for me, for the most part. If you want some inspiration, and you want some photos for ideas on creating ambience for a nice tea party, then this is a good book; if you're looking for a cookbook, best keep looking.

I have this book and the front cover is not accurate! It comes with another cover. The receipes are OK not many and not great. MOst of all it tells you it's a book of table settings and there are very little table settings or ideas in the book. I didn't like it.

Having Tea packs copious amounts of information into a thin, full-color hardcover volume. Author Tricia Foley provides an introductory education on the history and pleasures of tea as well as instructions on the art of tea tasting. The majority of the book consists of tea setting layouts, which range from a cozy tea for two to a proper English hotel tea. She includes several outdoor seasonal tea services for enjoying the beverage on the lawn, at a summer harvest picnic, or in the fall countryside. For each setting, the place setting and location are photographed, a specific tea strain is recommended, and up to a half dozen recipes for finger foods, salads, main courses, and dessert are provided.

Having Tea is more of a style book than a cookbook, although the recipes are fabulous. Readers will find themselves looking at a setting and then recipes; the book is not organized in the manner of a traditional cookbook. However, with a comprehensive index, recipes of interest can be located in a flash. Includes an appendix of mail-order tea suppliers.

Hoity toity, where is nanny? There's some hanky-panky here! LOVED this book on long family car trips as a kid. Just bought it for my 4 year old after he discovered that The Book With No Pictures was hilarious, and that words can be silly all by themselves. Unc's a hunka-dora foola. Granny, she does hula-hula!

wonderful childhood memories

This book kept me entertained for hours on end as a child and I recommend it for avid young readers or children who are not enjoying reading. It is filled with jokes, limericks, short stories, tongue twisters, and as the title suggests, words at play. I think it would add nicley to young child's collection of books, a really wonderful addtition. It is written from a grandfather's perspective and he mentions his grandchildren repeatedly throughout the book.

A Foray into the Possible World of Cloning . . .

I haven't read this book in a number of years, due to the fact I cannot find a copy. However, since I read it years ago, the story and title have stayed with me--which is a clear sign of a good, thought provoking book. The story takes place in a future where nuclear war has occurred and the birthrate has dropped off, so that scientists are looking into cloning as a solution. Particularly, the cloning of people from the twentieth century. The test group has been created from some genetic material that was recovered from the WWII period. This is the "Rag, bone and hank of hair" that the story refers to. A boy of the future is sent in to interact with this test group of two children and a maid. These three have been conditioned to believe they are living in WWII England. They are provided with false memories and stories and have no idea that they are in a far-flung future. The boy interacting with them undergoes a profound change of character as he works with them, coming to understand something of the nature of humanity, and himself.
What struck me most about this was the power of story and belief upon human experience, and how this ultimately shapes the startling ending of the story. The perceptions we have at the beginning are dramatically reworked by the last few pages. And the story provides some food for thought. With cloning becoming a real possibility in today's world, some of the questions raised here might not be so far off base. I found it to be an excellent SF read, with some wonderful accounts of what it would be like to be in England during WWII bombings. I'm hoping to get a copy one of these days so I can reread it. Hope you can find one too!

Chilling, unforgettable SF guaranteed to hook kids

This book has stayed with me in all its detail for 20 years and counting. SF for kids shouldn't be as strong as whiskey, as cold as wind sheering between glass skyscrapers, and as brutal as real life... should it?

As usual, Fisk pulls no punches. Like all good children's authors, his central lesson here is that you can't trust the grownups. A RAG, A BONE, AND A HANK OF HAIR may be the scariest of all his books with its grim future setting and tragic conclusion. It is also one of the most memorable (tied, in my mind, with YOU REMEMBER ME!). Young Brin starts off as a highly dislikable character who looks down on the Reborn family from the 1940s, but by the end of the book, he's been won over by their humanity, a quality that was absent from the sterile hitech world he was born into. But that's not the outcome that the developers of the Rebirthing technique wanted...

Every kid needs to hear the terrible truth about the perfidy of authorities and the unreliability of friends. Wrapped in an unputdownable story, the lesson sinks in and stays with the reader. Buy this book (or any of Nicholas Fisk's books) and give it to a child you know today.

This is the best special make up effects book on the market. It shows and teaches you the effects Tom Savini has done in movies, such as The Burning, The Prowler, Dawn of the Dead, Friday the 13th, Creepshow, and many more. It is a must for all who love make up effects, even if you dont like make up it is still a cool book for those who love horror movies. Being a make up artist myself, i dont know what i would do without this book.

Included are "Set Lists" that list the music recorded and played at different concerts and ses sions, and a tour itinerary that lists con certs, club dates, television appear ances, and other significant dates from 1966 to October 1970. Students inter ested in rock-and-roll trivia will enjoy this book.

Well written book with lots of photos

As an old guy who actually went to Hendrix concerts I found this a very good and interesting book with stories and info and perspectives from someone right there in the know. I also read Noels book among others. Nice photos too. I feel this is a must for any Hendrix info buff..

A Great Book

The book more than any other Iv'e read about Jimi really gave me an idea of what it was like to travel with, and be a part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience through the eyes of Mitch Mitchell, the drummer for the Experience.
Mitchell, writes his personal memoirs of his years with Hendrix on the road almost in diary fashion with amazing detail, along with rare photographs of rocks greatest guitarist.

This book is worth it's weight in gold. To hear the story told from Mitch's side is very interesting, especially if you are a drummer. If you were inspired by either Mitch or Jimi I highly recommend this book. The book reveals some very informative behind the scene stories and events (some which are quite historic). One thing that really impresses me is how Mitch talked about his relationships with Buddy Miles, and Ginger Baker. From a drummers standpoint, that is what it's all about, we are all brothers. Reading the book gives you a chance to relive the days of the Experience when Jimi, Mitch, Noël, Buddy Miles, and Billy Cox were rolling full stream ahead. Unfortunately Jimi left us much too soon, thank you Mitch Mitchell for sharing your experience with us. From end to end, this book is a treasure. Thank you for your time.

Language of Flowers is full of classic poetry, mostly love poems, revolving around over forty well-known flowers. Each flower represents a character quality;e.g., innocence, female ambition, grace and elegance, etc. In addition to the poems, a brief paragraph or two is given explaining the history and use of each flower. Finally, nearly each page has prints of beautiful oil paintings, of course, with the given flower in it. Overall, a wonderful gift for a lovely lady or a poetically-minded man.

Robin was raised in Concord, Massachusetts and attended Middlesex School and Belmont Hill School. After graduating from Belmont Hill, he joined the armed forces and flew a tour of combat missions over Germany during the closing days of World War II. He graduated from Harvard College in 1949 and went to New York to produce television shows. In 1952 he returned to Boston to work for the Sheraton Hotel Company co-founded by his father, Robert Lowell Moore senior. But, what Robin really wanted to do was write.

His first novel, Pitchman was about the burgeoning TV business. He continued to work for Sheraton and as a result of trying to establish Sheraton hotels in the Caribbean in the late 50s he ran across Fidel Castro which led to his chronicling the Cuban communist dictator's guerrilla campaign in a non-fiction book The Devil To Pay. A third novel about Robin's family business, Hotel Tomayne, brought about the end of his career in hotel management and was the start of his full-time writing career.

In 1963 his Harvard classmate, Robert Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy's brother, made it possible for Robin to join the US Army Special Forces as a civilian. Robin went through almost a year of training and then went to Vietnam with the Special Forces and wrote his definitive novel of the Vietnam War, The Green Berets which was published in May of 1965.

The French Connection followed this first success when Robin joined the New York police department in one of their most spectacular drug busts. Robin continued to write and his next big hit was The Happy Hooker with Xaviera Hollander, the story of the most controversial madam in New York City.

Robin then went on to write many more novels about international intrigue and adventure. He often traveled internationally to gather background material for his books.

Robin returned to Southeast Asia to write The Country Team about American diplomacy and Green Beret operations in Asia. The Khaki Mafia was next, chronicling the adventures of a beautiful, blond Australian girl's adventures as an entertainer and talent booker to US Army posts throughout Vietnam.

A stint as a treasure hunter in the Caribbean led to The Treasure Hunter. In the 70s Robin spent a year in Iran and the middle east researching his next novel, Dubai, an epic of gold smuggling, oil exploration, and political subversion in the Arab world. Two novels of gambling followed. The first was the story of a great con game, The Big Paddle and the other was the heartbreaking tale of a compulsive gambler, Compulsion. Robin returned to his hotel background in The Fifth Estate.

One of his more recent novels, The White Tribe, was the result of three years spent in Africa observing American and European mercenaries fighting communist terrorism. After Africa Robin traveled to Russia where he did extensive research leading to The Moscow Connection, the story of the sale of Russian nuclear weapons to rouge nations. His latest book, The Sparrowhook Curse, a paranormal tale of love and family revenge, was the result of many years summering at his parents island home on Cuttyhunk Island.

Robin continues to write and is currently working with Raymond Flynn, former US Ambassador to the Vatican and former Mayor of Boston, on a novel about Vatican intrigue, The Accidental Pope.

Great look into what was then a little known part of the military, known as the green berets. Soon after the death of JFK (a person whom the green berets hold with great reverence even to this day) and the early stages of American involvement in Vietnam, this book details some of the highly secretive, and at that point in time classified, special missions carried out by our elite military forces. It's interesting to read about these astounding missions which no one seems to know anything about, even 40 years after the end of the war. Men like those described in this book are truly heroes. They received no recognition from people back home and little apreciation from even higher ups in the military. This book then offers some insight into their daring work so that we might better understand just what it is these fine men did.

Accurate and Inspiring - and a Post Script on Larry Thorne

This is a great book. Very accurate, painfully so in many instances, especially considering the absurd restrictions placed on units operating in the field. Ironically, Moore's account of Special Forces operations in Vietnam is much more accurate than anything you'll ever get from the US government...even 40 years later.

Post Script: In the first Chapter, Moore writes about Capt. Steve Kornie, a larger than life Special Forces officer. Darn near everything Moore wrote was accurate! The officer's real name is Larry Allan Thorne (the "Americanized" version of his Finnish name - Lauri Allan Torni). He was a truly remarkable man by any measure.

Major Thorne was lost on a cross-border mission into Laos on 18 October 1965; but, at that time, and "for the record" he was classified as Missing In Action resulting from a helicopter crash 25 miles south of Da Nang (not even close).

A joint US-Vietnamese team found the wreckage in 1997, excavated the site in 1999, and collected the remains of Maj. Thorne and 3 Vietnamese (two pilots and a door gunner). A decision was made to do a joint internment at Arlington, since what little remained of the bodies was intermingled. Although positive identification, however, was made through Thorne's dental records and parts of the Swedish-K submachine gun that was his personal weapon.

The memorial stone is atypically large for Arlington; and the local Vietnamese community ensures that fresh flowers are maintained at the grave. I have provided additional information should you be in the neighborhood and would like to visit the site. Unless you have very specific information on dates of internment and the correct spelling of the name, you will not be successful in locating the site through the cemetery administration.
