Here is the first ever book-length account of one of Americas most powerful and mysterious institutions: the National Geographic Society, which for nearly a century has been America's lens on the world.
Behind the Society's success is the story of the Grosvenor clan, which dominates the society to this day. Millions of Americans have grown up with its stunningly successful magazine.
Organized by Alexander Graham Bell and other Washington socialites, the National Geographic Society blossomed under the long reign of Gilbert H. Grosvenor, who transformed it into an immensely profitable, secretive, influential, and world-renowned organization.

From Publishers Weekly
Washington financial writer Abramson calls this the first "independent look inside" the National Geographic Society, a dynastic magazine, map and book publishing colossus whose tax-free status and nonprofit postal rates have helped it achieve some $325 million in annual revenue. The magazine, hefty with slick paper and pleasant color pictures, is sent free every month to over 10 million dues-paying "members." Founded in 1899 by Alexander Graham Bell, the Geographic has been directed successively by Bell's son-in-law, Gilbert Grosvenor, by the latter's son and (currently) by his grandson. The society funded North Pole explorations by Admirals Peary and Byrd and, more recently, the projects of Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Louis Leakey. We are also told about editorial squabbles, tax litigation and diversification woes. Despite Abramson's often supercilious viewpoint and somewhat disorganized text, this tale of an American family institution is great fun.

From Library Journal
Abramson's goal is "to present an independent and balanced look at a major American institution." But he concentrates on the role of the Bell/Grosvenor families in the National Geographic Society's history, the business side, and the Society's role in the Cook-Peary North Pole controversy. He challenges the Society's tax-exempt status, its contributions to the study of geography, and its view of the world. While these criticisms are well considered, the book fails to look at the whole organization, and thus omits much that would interest the general reader. For example, it discusses too briefly the work of editors and photographers. An authorized history of the Society is scheduled for publication next year by Abrams. The present work is recommended for comprehensive collections. Michael D. Cramer, Virginia Polytechnic Inst. & State Univ. Lib., Blacksburg

Worth a look
By TruxtonSpangler
This book pulls the curtain back from National Geographic and purports to reveal what NatGeo is really all about. I'm sure NatGeo would disagree with some of what's written, but I can't claim to know which is correct. If the author's correct, NatGeo isn't nearly the altruistic organization it claims to be. If nothing else, the book provides a basis for discussion. It's well written and an easy read.

Very interesting read. The National Geographic Society has enjoyed its status as a final authority on any number of historical topics without question for far too long. Abramson casts a cold eye on the organization, discussing in depth, among other things, the Society's sponsorship of the explorer Robert E. Perry, whom they claimed to be the "discoverer" of the North Pole, and whose several failed expeditions they paid for. Abramson makes a compelling case that Perry's claim was hogwash, and that there were other legitimate claimants to that coveted title, most notably Frederick Cooke, an amateur explorer Abramson contends may have actually been the first person to reach the Pole--and whose reputation, not incidentally, the Geographic Society all but destroyed.
Abramson also calls into question the Geographic's status as a tax-exempt organization. This company is not an educational institution or a religious one, and as such ought to be paying its fair share of taxes. The fact that it has gotten away with this for decades is proof no one has ever shed a bright light on this organization. This book does exactly that.
