One fine day in AD 70, scruffy, working-class informer Marcus Didius Falco literally runs into a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl on the steps of the Forum. Falco finds himself in an inhospitable outpost of the Empire called Britain, where the weather is awful, the natives restless, and the women angry. If he does not tread carefully, the perilous puzzle of the silver pigs could be the death of him. Anton Lesser and Fritha Goodey star in this BBC Radio full-cast dramatization of Lindsey Davis's first Falco novel.

From Publishers Weekly
The intriguing premise of a detective story set in Imperial Rome in 70 A.D. is unpredictably fulfilled by Davis's hero-gumshoe, M. Didius Falco, an iconoclastic young republican. Falco rescues the niece of a senator from a kidnapping attempt, is attracted by both her innocence and the secret she keeps regarding a silver ingot (the "pig" of the title) and then stricken when her corpse is found in a spice warehouse. Hired by her family to track down the reasons behind her death, Falco spends the winter in Britain working as a slave in a silver mine. Enduring vividly depicted hardship with customary sharp-witted pluck, he picks up the hints of a plan to overthrow Vespasian, the current emperor. He also meets the senator's divorced, sharp-tongued daughter, Helena Justina, and brings her back to Rome where they work with--and against--each other to bring the well-developed plot to its satisfying conclusion. Wisecracking in ancient idiom, Falco seems, nevertheless, a recognizably up-to-date young man, one whose honor, humor and humanity work him quickly into reader's affection. Davis's story, though couched in period detail, rewards as much for deft handling of plot and depth of characterization as for its historicity.

Describe a detective in seedy surroundings, an impulsive young woman, intrigue in high places, and the plot sounds all too familiar. But, name the detective Marcus Didius Falco, place him in first-century Rome, and an entertaining newcomer to fictional detectives is introduced. In 70 A.D., Falco is a cynical observer of himself and society under the new emperor, Vespasian. An encounter with a senator's niece precipitates a sequence of events including murder, plots within the ruling family, and a trip to Britain to uncover thefts in the Roman silver mines. Woven into Falco's adventures are humor, romance, suspense, and clues for the discerning reader. The maps are helpful and even the "Dramatis Personae" is entertaining. Highly recommended for mystery or historical fiction collections.

Whet my appetite
By Chapati
I read Silver Pigs based on the recommendations of someone on a historical fiction book group with me, and I really am grateful to her! This book is wonderful. In general, I stick to historical fiction in a fairly limited time frame, rarely venturing out of my favorite niche of Georgian and Regency era England. However, I have now become a devoted fan of the ancient Roman empire.
Lindsey Davis is so talented at melding little facts about daily life in Rome (and Britain) into her story. The story is told from the point of view of Marcus Didius Falco as though you are his contemporary, and he assumes that you understand all the "pop culture" references and side jokes he makes about Rome, Roman culture, and the Empire; in this way, you really *do* learn a lot about the history of the period, in a "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" type of way. It reads almost like a satirical account in a Roman newspaper might read. I LOVED the way Davis did that, and still managed to create truly sympathetic characters that you cheer for.
I'm excited to learn that there are at least sixteen books in the Falco series- I have added them ALL to my TBR pile and look forward to the pleasure of reading each one.

A True Roman Mystery
By A Customer
Lindey Davis has a marvelous capacity to make you feel like you are living in Rome of 2000 years ago. She developes her characters with a great flair and gives very human qualities that makes you feel like you have known Didius Falco personally. I began this series a month ago with, Silver Pigs. I have since read the the following four books and have ordered the rest. On the advice of one of the reviewers, I ordered her more recent books with Amazon.Co.UK so I didn't have to wait for them to be published here.
