Of interest but rife with mistakes.
By GARY KAPLAN
Caveat emptor! (let the buyer beware). I bought this book many years ago because I have always been interested in European history and the royal dynasties that shaped that history. While I have found it helpful and still refer to it, I have also found numerous mistakes, particularly in the captions of the illustrations. Some are of dubious provenance, while others are clearly mislabeled. For example, at the bottom of page 330 are two portraits purporting to be of Spain's Philip II and one of his consorts. Both are by the great Spanish painter Velasquez (which it says), but are, in fact of Philip IV and HIS consort! Another that is not from a caption can be found towards the bottom of page 229, in a listing of British monarchs where it refers to the Electress Sophia (mother of George I) as the daughter of James I, rather than James' GRAND-DAUGHTER! Likewise, at the bottom of page 228, in the same listing, it refers to Edward III as "the Black Prince." Edward III was NOT the Black Prince. The Black Prince was Edward III's SON (who predeceased his father and never reigned), and the father of Richard II. And so-on!

Excellent Overview
By A Customer
Gives an good middle-detailed historical account of the major historical figures & Kingdoms from Ancient times till present. Probably better on medieval times & modern than it is on ancients maybe because there is so much stuff out there on the ancient era. I've read it primarily to fill out my knowledge of 17-19th century France & Spain. If you collect European coins this book is a must. Still it can be a little simplistic as if the book was directed towards high school students although it definately is a league apart from one of those sub-standard poor quality student textbooks.

Wonderful resource!

Another terrific book for those people who are history buffs and do a lot of royal research. This book is a great source for all of the European Kingdoms. I haven't read it from cover to cover yet but have already used it to do some referencing and found it invaluable. Highly recommended.
