A MUST-HAVE absolutely, Amazing Book, Original Technique, I LOVE IT!
By Yael Bolender
I actually bought this Book in English, because I already bought it in French when it was released in France in the 90's, and now I wanted to be sure that I didn't miss anything. Actually I did, there are a few photos which don't exist in the French version.
It is a book about stenciling, so far, nothing extraordinary, BUT Althea Wilson has her own way and own tools to make stencils. She also has her own style, which is very far from the English traditional style. She spent a lot of time in Africa when she was younger and it shows in her way of choosing motives. What is weird, is that her style and choice of colors are absolutely not what I usually like, but her techniques, her approach, her way to add some gold and silver, the tools she uses, the stencils she creates are amazing and fascinating for me.
I think I read this book in French at least ten times, to be sure I forgot nothing.
She uses a rather "craft" technique and makes some wonderful Art with it. She makes her own giant stencils which really amaze me.
If you are passionate about stenciling, if you like what is creative, original and different, if you love the beautiful tools and curious about other people's technique, this book is a MUST. No need to have it in French, the English version is perfect!
It is not a new book, rather old now, but actually, I found nothing better since then. So, I highly recommend it, it is among my favorite ones, a book to keep forever. If only Althea Wilson had made more books than the two she has released!
She had a short career as a writer, but she won't be forgotten for sure!
This book deserves at least ten stars and even more!
P.S.: check her different shells stencils: a true marvel!
