A Treasure Trove
By Wilum Hopfrog Pugmire, Esq.
I found this book in a bookshop decades ago, and loved it. Why I eventually had to sell it I cannot remember. Happily, I found it again, here at Amazon, this amazing bookshop. This enormous folio-size tome is divided into four sections, TERROR OF THE SOUL, MYSTERIES, HUMOR AND SATIRE, and FLIGHTS AND FANTASIES wherein are contained 61 Works. In his Introduction, the editor writes: "THE ANNOTATED POE is for the reader who is attracted to, curious about, delighted with, or mystified by the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Like most books of this kind, it is somewhat informal; while the Poe scholar will find much of interest here, I have always kept the general reader firmly in mind. The versions of the tales used are those with which most readers are familiar, but if there are significant departures from other versions or if literary scholarship has uncovered textual errors, these are mentioned. The real purpose of the book, however, is to bring together in convenient form explanations, definitions, interpretations, sources, and biographical information, adding to them information on works based on or inspired by Poe's work--in other words, to increase one's understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of Poe." In this, the editor has absolutely succeeded.

The book is handsomely designed and filled with a multitude of wonderful illustrations. The annotations are in-depth and fascinating. Some are reflective rather than factual, such as Annotation 14 in "Hop-Frog," assessing the line from the tale, "But the king loved his practical jokes, and took pleasure in forcing Hop-Frog to drink and (as the king called it) 'to be merry.'" Annotation: "Perhaps Poe is reflecting his own well-known reaction to alcohol (see Introduction). '...take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry' is from Luke 12: 19." I'm not certain that such an annotation has validity, but it is suggestive.

This is an excellent tome, and one to return to again and again, for the delight of the fiction and the information of the notes.

A must-have for any serious Poe reader
By Z Hayes
I've loved the stories of Edgar Allan Poe since I was a child and every October, as part of my Halloween tradition, I revisit his writings. Lately, I've been watching some of the classic film adaptations of some of Poe's more popular works, and been reading the stories right after, just to mix things up a little, and it has been an enjoyable experience. It has also been a rewarding experience with this particular edition which is "The Annotated Tales of Edgar Allan Poe", published in 1986 by Avenel Books.

This is a behemoth of a book as it is folio-sized and runs 685 pages. The book is edited by Stephen Peithman, who also wrote the introduction, notes, and provided the bibliography. There are plenty of B&W illustrations throughout which also makes this a visually appealing work. Poe's stories are categorized into four sections here : Terror of the Soul, Mysteries, Humor and Satire, and Flights and Fantasies. Here is a complete listing of the tales under the four categories:

Terror of the Soul:
Metzengerstein
MS. Found in a Bottle
The Assignation
Berenice
Morella
Ligeia
The Fall of the House of Usher
William Wilson
A Descent into The Maelstrom
The Oval Portrait
The Masque of the Red Death
The Pit and the Pendulum
The Tell-Tale Heart
The Black Cat
The Premature Burial
The Imp of the Perverse
The Cask of Amontillado
Hop-Frog

Mysteries:
The Man of the Crowd
The Murders in the Rue Morgue
The Mystery of Marie Roget

The Oblong Box
The Purloined Letter
Thou Art the Man

Humor and Satire:
The Duc De L'Omelette

The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether
The Literary Life of Thingum Bob, Esq.
The Thousand-and-Second Tale of Scheherazade

Flights and Fantasies:
Loss of Breath
Shadow -A Parable
Silence - A Fable
The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall
King Pest
The Man tha Was Used Up
The Island of the Fay

Mesmeric Revelation
The Balloon-Hoax
The Angel of the Odd
The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar
The Sphinx

Landor's Cottage

The annotations provide illuminating insights into Poe's stories and helped me appreciate his fascinating tales better. I think this is a wonderful resource for those wishing to obtain more insights into the stories that have fascinated readers for close to two centuries. Highly recommended!

Hard To Beat.
By Steven Daedalus
It doesn't matter whether you're a Poe scholar or a curious party; this has got about everything you'd want to know. Virtually every page is glossed with annotations. No illustrations. As Stephen Peithman puts it in his introduction, "The purpose of this book is to bring together in convenient form explanations, interpretations, sources, definitions, and biographical information, adding to them information on works based on or inspired by Poe's work."

He's gotten the job done. If Poe describes Roderick Usher's library, Peithman goes through it book by book -- titles, authors, and a brief description of the contents,. It's frankly awesome.

I suspect that most high school graduates know something of Poe's short stories -- "The Tell Tale Heart," for instance -- and probably have heard at least a line or two of "The Raven." But this book includes essays and stories in sections labeled "Humor and Satire" (eg., "Never Bet The Devil Your Head") and "Flights and Fantasies" (eg., "The Balloon Hoax"). These are lesser known pieces and fine to browse through. I'm not sure that "The Facts In The Case of M. Valdemar" belongs in the fantasy section because it comes across as a short story, however disgusting and unbelievable.

When I taught psychology in college, I used "William Wilson" as required reading. The students' job was to read the story, then explain briefly how it was related to Sigmund Freud's tripartite division of personality. It must not have been very challenging because most of them got it right away -- the character of William Wilson represented the narrator's conscience or "superego." I think I used "Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde" for the "id." No matter. The students volunteered that Poe was "a good read," as one of them put it. I also considered using one of Poe's fantasies -- "The Man That Was Used Up" -- as required reading in a sociology class, illustrating the importance of what Erving Goffman called self presentation. But I decided instead to just tell the story briefly. Younger kids in elementary school were more impressed by the tale of a commanding public figure who turned out to be mostly made up of artificial parts. They were in fact transfixed.

I've always admired Poe -- a genius, despite his having been a racist, an alcoholic, and a manic-depressive. He's the poet of nightmares, as Robert Frost is the poet of nostalgic daydreams. I wish this volume had contained the poems as well as the prose pieces. There aren't many poems and they're all fairly short. I used to read them at night to my kid when he was about twelve and he enjoyed them immensely.

When I took a walk through the house Poe had lived in while working on "The Raven" and some other material, in Philadelphia, the walls had been covered with plasterboard and painted white. I noticed a crack in one of the walls and a bit of crumbling 19th-century brick exposed. I picked a tiny piece up with two fingers, wrapped it in a Kleenex, and stashed it in my office, so there is now a little material thread between my hovel, that hovel, and the poor tormented wretch who occupied it.
