The Five of Hearts: An Intimate Portrait of Henry Adams and his Friends 1880-1918, by Patricia O'Toole

In this first biography of an extraordinary circle of friends, Patricia O'Toole re-creates the lives of five remarkable Americans, revealing how they left their mark on the turbulent decades of the late nineteenth century - a time that saw the opening of the American West, the early stirring of feminism, the rise of the robber barons, and the emergence of the United States as a world power. The quintet included Henry Adams, historian and scion of America's foremost political dynasty; his wife, Clover, spirited and witty, a gifted photographer, and tragic victim of depression; John Hay, who began his Washington career as a secretary in Lincoln's White House and ended as secretary of state; his wife, Clara, heiress to an Ohio industrial fortune and the personification of upper-class Victorian morality; and Clarence King, a dashing, charismatic scientist-turned-entrepreneur who never managed to live up to his first triumph - a brilliant geological survey of the West. Calling themselves the Five of Hearts, the friends came together in 1880 at Henry and Clover Adams's home in Washington. They gossiped about politics, discovered their mutual love of painting and literature, and shared the closely guarded secret that the anonymous author of the year's literary sensation, "Democracy" was Adams himself. The Five of Hearts befriended many of their notable contemporaries, from writers Henry James, Mark Twain, Bret Harte, W.D. Howells, Edith Wharton, and Robert Louis Stevenson to painters John LaFarge and John Singer Sargent, architects H.H. Richardson and Stanford White, sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and every president from Abraham Lincoln to Theodore Roosevelt. A natural story-teller who combines the compassion of the biographer with the dispassion of the historian, Patricia O'Toole has created an engaging - and deeply touching - account of the Five of Hearts and the worlds of power, privilege and genius in which they lived.

From Publishers Weekly
The exclusive fivesome who regularly met for tea in Washington, D.C., in the early 1880s were historian Henry Adams, diplomat John Hay, their wives--restless, resentful Clover Adams and placid Clara Hay--and geologist-adventurer Clarence King, "the ideal American they all wanted to be." Their lives before and after Clover committed suicide in 1885 are the subject of this vivid composite biography by a columnist for Lear's magazine. Passing through these brightly lit pages, as they did in the Hay and Adams houses in Lafayette Square, are their neighbor Lizzie Cameron (with whom Adams fell in love), Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, Henry James, Edith Wharton, John LaFarge, Augustus St. Gaudens, Teddy Roosevelt, Henry Cabot Lodge and other opinion-makers of the Gilded Age. The "extraordinary flower of their friendship" bloomed until the spring day in 1918 when Adams's body was put to rest beside that of Clover in Washington's Rock Creek Church Cemetery. Photos.

A Washington Salon - 1880-1910
By A Customer
The book is not intellectually deep, but is most enjoyable. It provides a view of a small American elite representing a transitional society between the late Civil War and early 19th century. It centers on five diverse people who, by chance, formed a unizue Washington social and intellectual salon mostly centering on themselves, but benefitting from each member's extensive contacts in the U.S. and France (to a lesser extent). The five were Henry Adams (descendant of two Presidents), his wife, Clover, John Hay (Secretary to Lincoln and Sec of State at the turn of the century), his wife, and Clarence King, the firs head of the U.S. Geological survey.
Adams and Hay built large homes on the north of Layafette Square which became the center of the salon (the sites are occupied by the Hay Adams Hotel).
The focus is on the personalities and interests of these unique characters, the depiction of life at the heart of our capitol, and references to art and architecture integral to Washington of that era, but which led to a broader influence along the east coast particularly. In a very concrete setting, the author deals with love, tragedy, and the political and intellectual curiosit which dominated these people's lives. None has really survived in the public consciousness, but all played significant roles in their time and deserve this interest in what made their lives.

Circle of Friends
By Kcolorado
As a photographer I have had a fascination with the life of Clover Adams, a 19th century American photographer who ended her life by suicide. She seemed in many ways to be a modern woman, married to Henry Adams, a decidely 19th century man. Adams, a member of the legendary Adams family that gave the US two presidents, is best known for "The Education of Henry Adams" a quasi autobiography he wrote after Clover's death, notable for many reasons including that it doesn't mention her. Henry's books and life have slipped from view though are highly regarded in academic circles. I was pleased to discover another view of Clover and Henry in Patricia O'Toole's very readable portrait of a circle of friends that included the Adams, John Hay, Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of State, and his wife Clara and noted geologist and explorer Clarence King. It is a story of great friendship, recorded in the epistalory mode of letters, that may become one of the greatest casualties of the Internet age. While one could read the book for the intimate glimse it provides of renown figures of the age, including Henry James,Theodore Roosevelt, Robert Louis Stevenson and painter John La Farge the most fascinating part is the record of the friendship of the five, who refer to themeselves as "the five of hearts" More surprisingly is the suggestion of illicit romantic affairs these seeminly straight laced Victorians engaged in. It is a wonderful read and illuminates the Gilded Age of fin-de-siecle America. Did I learn more about Clover? Yes, her humor, wit and troubled life is discussed and the view of her through her intimate friends illumniates more though is tantalizingly incomplete.

then and now

This was fascinating to me, especially when I thought about the differences between American society then & now. People then were less egalitarian, more refined. They were hypocritical/discrete; repressed/stoic.

This group of 5 friends were an unusual bunch. Henry Adams & John Hay probably were the most similar of the group in terms of temperament, but different in terms of background. Adams was one of THE Adamses & rich because of his maternal grandfather, while Hay was more or less self-made. Because of this difference, Hay was a bit more of a doer than Adams.

But the main difference was that Adams had more in common with his wife than Hay had with his. Poor Clara Hayes is the only one of the five who doesn't have a Wikipedia page. She was 11 years younger, plain, placid, & less of a partner to Hay than a mother of his children. She had intelligence, but her ambitions outside the home seemed to fade with each birth. Marian "Clover' Adams was also from a wealthy family, but was also witty, a talented photographer, & emotional.

Clarence King was different from Adams and Hay in that he was a man of action rather than just an observer of life. However unknown to everyone, he led a double life. At his death everyone learned about the other life, which included an alias.

The intersecting lives of these 5 people, were they fictional, would be thought unrealistic. I'm glad that someone has written about them. The book seems well-researched but not dry nor pedantic.
