Medicine Women: The Story of Early-American Women Doctors, by Cathy Luchetti

The story of women in medicine is multi- fold, from their ascendency as healers and midwives in the early years of American Colonialism to their gradual decline as they were eclipsed by men, whose entrance into the medical ranks brought new standards of exclusionary professionalism. All-male medical schools, state medical boards, and licensing pushed "healing" women into the subcategory of midwife or nurse.

Nineteenth-century women retaliated by forming their own colleges, studying independently, and eventually forcing themselves into competition with accepted medical institutions. But these women doctors had a twin burden of prejudice to overcome: first, society's Victorian grudge against any woman who wished to snap the bonds of domesticity and become a professional; and, also, the basic distrust of a rural population for medicine. Women had to win the confidence of female patients before launching into feminist encouragement, advocating fresh air, exercise, and uncorseted clothing. The discreet balance of power between physician and patient hung in delicate balance, either tipped toward female competition or stirred into a level of feminine support.

Understanding the stories of these medical pioneers--their motivations, hardships, and conflicts--assigns a human face to otherwise dry statistics. The early-American female doctor comes vividly to life through her own writings, which have been incorporated into this book. Along with Cathy Luchetti's expert and engaging narrative, and a collection of more than 50 stunning photographs, Medicine Women offers the key to the heart of the rural, frontier doctor.

Amazon.com Review
Lively, compelling first-person accounts of their work and the often appalling state of medical practice before the 20th century conjure strong scenes of life on the American frontier. As healers and midwives, women were lauded for medical wisdom in the first flush of the American colonies. But the power to dispense medicine was gradually usurped by male physicians. By the Victorian age, midwives--who often knew enough to wash up before a birth, unlike male counterparts who, pooh-poohed germ theory--were denounced as filthy and dangerous or derided as abortionists. The first American women doctors struggled mightily against popular convictions that their sex was too brainless, irrational, and delicate for medical tasks. In the mid-1800s, female students at the medical school at John Hopkins could examine men only from the neck up. The hostility directed at "unnatural" women invading this male realm was palpable, ranging from hissing and curses to outright sabotage. Anna Broomall was mobbed by angry medical students as she attended a surgery clinic in 1869. Recalling this during an interview some years later, she said, "Bless you, boys! Nothing helps a good cause so much as a well-advertised opposition." --Francesca Coltrera

It Ain't "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman"
By A Customer
Hollywood actually had a good idea, but couldn't help dumbing it down to the point the show was more of a pulp romance than based on fact.
This book is the real thing: women struggling with families, school, and society to become physicians. Of course, there was lots of male opposition, but there were those men who helped, too. One respected medical professor told his all-male class that they had a "sister" in the class and he expected his students to treat her as one, and they did. Of course, she still had to work twice as hard as the men and be twice as good, but it's a lot easier if you don't have a classful of people trying to trip you up at every opportunity. Also, Brigham Young, of the Mormon Church encouraged women to become physicians; at times the church would even subsidize the tuition for medical school.
Even after their degree, women still had to convince people that despite the fact they were women, they truly were good physicians, which meant doing things that male physicians might find "beneath" them: performing emergency surgery on a horse, anesthesizing a $1,500 prized sow, taking care of basic comforts and needs of their patients (hauling water, bringing blankets, writing letters for the illiterate).
And as for the photographs, I'll bet you never saw so many confident, professional-looking 19th - turn of the century women in your life!

An Excellent Public History of Early Days of Women in Medicine
By Michael J Helquist
Public history at its best engages the general reader while also offering scholarly significance. The author Cathy Luchetti succeeds with both in this comprehensive overview of women’s role in medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries in the US. Her narrative is informative and so well-crafted that readers are drawn into the history of something that may not have interested them previously. This early sentence is an example:
“Loosed from precedent, free to scramble through the twists and turns of nineteenth-century society, medicine was a rambunctious and unpredictable arena where the unschooled were healed by the unlicensed…”

Luchetti is especially good at describing the rough and tumble days of medicine when few authentic, proven treatments existed and diagnostic tools were either intuitive or primitive. She also presents well the pervasive challenges and obstacles that women faced from hostile medical school environments to resistance from patients at having a female practitioner. This volume is particularly rich with profiles and anecdotes of specific women doctors. Their stories make the experience all the more real for readers and will likely prompt others to delve more deeply into this fascinating history.

Women healers of the West. You go, girl!
By Peggy Vincent
What a wonderful book, a superb tribute to women as healers, esp those of the American West. I'm a midwife, author of BABY CATCHER: Chronicles of a Modern Midwife, and had the privilege of writing an endorsement of Luchetti's next book, Children of the West - but I wish I'd had an opportunity to blurb this one, as the content is so close to my heart. Medicine Women is a compilation of first-person accounts of women healers, midwives, dentists, abortionists, often just good women helping others during the brief era of the settling of the West. This is a book to read carefully from beginning to end, but it's also a book to pick up and browse through at random. Full of successes and failures, hopes and fears, evidence of knowledge and ignorance, it is a book written with passion that shows on each page.
